Serial Burn, Lake City Heroes book 3, from Revell. Here's a little bit about the story:

INTERVIEW WITH LYNETTE EASON

I have to admit that Lynette Eason is one of my favorite authors, and her Danger Never Sleeps series is edge-of-your-seat type of action!

Here is a recent interview about her latest release, the fourth and last of the series, Hostile Intent

Hostile Intent is the gripping conclusion to your Danger Never Sleeps series. What ties the four books together?

The four books are tied together by four friends. Three who met in the military and one who was already friends with the Acceptable Risk heroine, Sarah Denning.

The military is an underlying theme through your series. How did you become so well-versed in military careers?

Research, research, research! Seriously, I know people in the military, and they were more than generous with their time in allowing me to pick their brains. One friend even read different scenes and then gave me feedback on how to fix them. That was such a blessing.

Your books often feature strong female protagonists. Do you have a favorite character in the Danger Never Sleeps series?

I think I'll have to go with Sarah from Acceptable Risk, although Ava from Hostile Intent runs a close second. But Sarah is strong. She doesn't hold back and is no one's doormat. I love how she doesn't let anyone define who she should be and fights to be her own person. She's just a cool character.

What do you hope readers will learn from Hostile Intent?

I think it's safe to say that we all have burdens and baggage. We have first, second, and third impressions about people we know. Let's face it; we all make judgments, but the truth is, we never know all there is to know about a person—or what their struggles are. I hope Hostile Intent will remind readers not to judge too swiftly or too harshly and to look beneath the surface of others' actions.

When did you become interested in writing romantic suspense novels?

I've always loved writing. Even in school, I'd rather have an essay questions than a multiple choice one. When I was in the eighth grade, I tried writing a novel but gave up because it was too hard. Then when I was a young mother, I was home alone a lot, as my husband traveled with his job. I decided that it would be a good distraction to try to write  novel again. So I did. And I actually finished that one. Then I wrote another and another. The fourth one was published in 2007. And, as they say, the rest is history.

Here's a little about Hostile Intent

Shortly after high school, Ava Jackson joined the military. But when her mother became ill, she was forced to request an early discharge. After visiting her mother in the nursing home, Ava is attacked. Fortunately, FBI Special Agent Caden Denning arrives in time to help ward off her attacker.

Caden reveals to Ava that there is a serial killer trying to wipe out military families, and he believes that Ava may hold the key to these murders. The killer clearly has an agenda and Ava appears to be next on his list. Ava and Caden must work together to discover the pattern to the hits, uncover looming secrets, and track down the killer before it is too late.

Lynette Eason is the bestselling author of Collateral Damage, Acceptable Risk, and Active Defense, as well as Protecting Tanner Hollow. She has completed several series including the Blue Justice, Women of Justice, Deadly Reunions, Hidden Identity, and (my personal favorite) the Elite Guardians series. She is the winner of three ACFW Carol Awards, the Selah Award, and the Inspirational Reader's Choice Award, among others, and she is currently working on the first book of a brand new series! Yea!

Called to Protect by Lynette Eason

by Patricia Bradley

Last night I was up reading Called to Protect until 2 a.m.! And I really needed to get up early. But I just had to finish Lynette's latest book. Suspense readers, this is one you do not want to miss! Here's the back cover copy:

For the past year, Chloe St. John has been working as a K-9 cop with her German shepherd partner, Hank. After being dumped by her fiancé for another woman, Chloe has decided that Hank is just about the only male she likes. She's over the whole romance thing and focuses her attention on doing her job. Because a serious case of human trafficking with connections to her missing cousin just landed in her lap.

When US Marshall Blake MacCallum's daughter goes missing, he's ordered to kill the judge he's protecting and tell no one about his daughter's disappearance or she will die. Blake races against the clock to rescue his daughter while Chloe and Hank are asked to be a part of the task force assembled to bring down the traffickers. Chloe finds herself attracted to the silent, suffering man, but thanks to her previous bad judgment, she wonders if she can trust him. And can Blake trust himself around this firecracker of a woman?

I had the opportunity to sit in on a workshop Lynette conducted back in September about plotting vs pansting, and we had a blast. Lynette pretty much writes by the seat of her pants. She plots out some of the details, but not all.

I am amazed at how she weaves the different threads through her story. In Called to Protect, Blake MacCallum is protecting a federal judge who is trying to get legislation passed to make jail sentences harder those convicted of human trafficking crimes and someone is trying to kill him.

Chloe St. John comes from a family of police officers and she can hold her own with anyone, especially when she has her K-9 partner. And Hank really comes in handy while dealing with human traffickers.

The stakes are always high in Lynette's books, but when Blake's daughter is kidnapped, and he receives a text ordering him to kill the judge or his daughter will die, the stakes jump sky high. Now you see why I had to stay up and finish the book.

Called to Protect is a fast-paced read with lots of twists and turns, so when you pick it up, make sure you fasten your seat belt!

I'd love to give away my copy of Called to Protect, but I can't part with it! What I will do is give away a $10 Amazon or B&N or CBD gift card and you can purchase your own copy. :-) A name will be chosen by Random dot Org next Friday night. Just leave a comment and tell me if you prefer ebooks or print.

If you can't wait until next Friday, you can pick up a copy of Called to Protect at Amazon or B&N or CBD.

AND I'm also reviewing Called to Protect over at my blog and if you hop over there and leave a comment, I'll enter you in a drawing for a copy of my latest book, Justice Betrayed!

3.  Where's the most amazing place you've ever been and why? Oooh, tough one. I’ve been A LOT of places. I would say, I loved Europe.  Paris, London, Prague, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Amsterdam, Brussels, and more. It’s hard to pick!

Hot new fall suspense!

Interview with Lynette Eason

By Marji Laine
I'm so delighted to chat with best-selling Christian suspense author, Lynette Eason. Her latest, Always Watching, is brand new and already sparking a huge buzz. And for good reason. Make sure you check out my review coming out next Monday! And enter for a chance to win a free copy. Keep reading!

Lynette, thanks so much for visiting at Suspense Sisters! I have to tell you, I opened it to just get a little taste before turning out the light and had trouble putting it down!
Obviously, that makes me glad to hear! LOL. It means I’ve done my job. :)

Where does your story seed start? Characters? Setting? Or some twist on a news story?
Usually, I get the idea for the story first. Just a glimmer of something. Like “what if there were a team of female bodyguards who went into business together, and they all had some time of law enforcement background?” Then I think, “Who would these women be?” And then I start putting together their backgrounds. Before too long, the story starts coming together for the first one, then the second and so on.

Your stories are so vivid.
Thank you!

The action, characters, setting all take on life. Do the words flow that way on first draft or do you use a lens for that when you revise?
For the most part, they do come on the first draft. I can write anywhere from three to six books in a year, so I don’t have a whole lot of time to edit. I get the story down as best I can and then send it off to my beta readers. Fortunately, they’re both in law enforcement, and they both have an interest in writing. That helps tremendously as they catch some line/copy edit things as well as correcting my police procedural stuff when it needs it. Of course, as I’m working through the story, I’m editing, or I’ll go back and add details as they occur to me, especially red herrings, etc. but when I’m done with the story, I’m pretty much done. At least until my copy editor gets ahold of it.

Lol! What would you say was the strangest thing you came across while you wrote this story? (Detail from research, scene that you dreamed up, maybe something you experienced that inspired an event?)
I don’t know that I really came across a strange thing. Does it count that I think it’s strange that my brain even comes up with what it does? LOL. I think when I was writing Always Watching, I had a few friends who were going through the adoption process. I worked adoption into the story, and I think it came out great. It’s not a big part of the story, but it does affect my heroine to a large degree.

I know Always Watching is the first of a series. What characters are involved who will return, and who is the star of book #2? Is there a backstory in one of your characters that you’re tempted to flesh out?
All of the major characters in book #1 will return. Book #2 is Katie Singleton’s story. I introduce a new hero, Daniel Matthews, who I think readers will fall in love with. I also go a little deeper into the backstories of the characters who will show in books #3 and #4. Book #3 deals with Maddy McKay, who is fully healed from her harrowing ordeal, and Quinn Holcombe, the surly detective that I hope readers have come to love in spite of his grouchiness. I just turned their story in and think readers will love it. I’m now working on Haley Callaghan and trying to get to know her a little bit before dropping her into the middle of trouble.

I can't wait! Here's a little more about Always Watching from the Amazon summary of the book:
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have more than just skill and prowess in common--they're also all women. When it becomes clear that popular psychiatrist and radio personality Wade Savage has a stalker, his father secretly hires Elite Guardians in order to protect his son.
But when Wade's bodyguard is attacked and nearly killed, agency owner Olivia Edwards must step in and fill the gap. Olivia's skills are about to be tested to the limit as Wade's stalker moves from leaving innocent gifts at his door to threatening those closest to him. Olivia has the feeling that she's next on the list. And to complicate things even further, she realizes that her heart may be in as much danger as her client.
Bestselling author and fan favorite Lynette Eason drops readers right into the action in this fast-paced new series with a unique twist. Readers will love these strong female characters who put it all on the line to save lives.

Writers Conferences and a book giveaway!

Hi everyone,

As I was thinking of a topic for today’s post, I thought I’d tell you a little about how I spent my weekend. I had a great time teaching at the Carolina Christian Writers Conference.  We had about 100 attendees and it was just really exciting to see the eager anticipation on each writer’s face.

I know a lot of you who read this blog are readers and we thank you for that! However, I know some of you are also writers. If you’re new to the craft, now is a wonderful time to start thinking about a writers conference. There’s no better way to really focus and concentrate on learning the craft than going to a conference.

But you need to be picky. You need to assess your skill level (or get someone to do that for you!), and then find that conference that best suits your level. I remember my first conference. I attended the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference held at Ridgecrest in Black Mountain, North Carolina. I had two completed manuscripts and I felt sure someone would want to buy them. Well, as it turns out, no one wanted to buy them, but because I attended classes and talked to agents and editors, I was able to learn so much in those fully packed four days. Yes, it was rather expensive, but I have to say, I thought it well worth the price.

So, have you ever been to a writers conference? If so, did you consider it worthwhile? And if you’ve never been and want to go, is there one you’re looking at?

And while I have your attention, I just want to say that my book When A Secret Kills releases May 1! Woohoo! It may even be in stores now. Here’s the back cover blurb:

Investigative reporter Jillian Carter knows it's time to put the past to rest. She's tired of looking over her shoulder, letting a killer go free. She's no longer the scared kid who changed her name and disappeared. Now, no matter what the cost, Jillian must do what she is trained to do--ferret out the truth and expose it. Senator Frank Hoffman committed murder ten years ago--and Jillian watched it happen.

Didn't she?

Not even the enigmatic and attractive Colton Brady, her ex-boyfriend and nephew of the killer, will be able to make her leave this alone. Get ready for the spine-tingling, nail-biting conclusion to an explosive series.

Leave a comment to win a copy of the book!

The Difference between a suspense and a mystery

Hi everyone, Lynette Eason here. I was trying to think of a topic for today's post and thought I'd answer a question that I got the other day. What's the difference between a mystery and a suspense? Below are sixteen suggestions. I was wondering if you agree with them. Do you have any differences that you would add? Any you disagree with? Leave a comment and I'll put you in a drawing for my newest release, When A Secret Kills to release the first of May.

THE BACK COVER:

She's come home to put a killer behind bars.
But the killer plans to put her six feet under.

Investigative reporter Jillian Carter knows it’s time to put the past to rest. She’s tired of looking over her shoulder, letting a killer go free. She’s no longer the scared kid who changed her name and disappeared. Now, no matter what the cost, Jillian must do what she is trained to do—find the truth and expose it. Sixteen Differences between Mystery and Suspense

Taken from: Skillman, Trish MacDonald. Writing the Thriller. Writers Digest Books. 2000.

A mystery concerns itself with a puzzle. Suspense presents the reader with a nightmare.

A mystery is a power fantasy; we identify with the detective. Suspense is a victim fantasy; we identify with someone at the mercy of others.

A mystery can be likened to a myth. Suspense is more like a fairy tale.

In a mystery the hero or heroine already has the skills he or she needs to solve the puzzle. In suspense, he or she must learn new skills to survive.

In a mystery, thinking is paramount. In suspense, feeling is paramount.

The most important action in a mystery takes place offstage. In suspense, the important action happens onstage.

A mystery usually takes place within a small circle of friends. The hero or heroine of a suspense novel often finds him or herself thrust into a larger world.

Readers of mysteries are looking for clues. Readers of suspense are expecting surprises.

In a mystery, information is withheld. In suspense novels, information is provided.

The ideal reader of mysteries remains one step behind the hero or heroine. Those who read suspense should be one step ahead of the hero or heroine.

Mystery readers expect a series. Those who read suspense know a book can be a one shot.

The hero or heroine in a mystery is looking for suspects. The hero or heroine in suspense looks for betrayers.

A mystery hero or heroine must confront a series of red herrings. The suspense novel hero or heroine faces a cycle of distrust.

Mystery endings must be intellectually satisfying. Suspense endings must provide emotional satisfaction.

Mysteries are usually three hundred manuscript pages. Suspense novels can be longer.
