Welcome Elizabeth Goddard

Hi everyone! Today Elizabeth Goddard is visiting and I asked her a few questions that she graciously answered. But first a little bit about Beth, as I usually call her.

Elizabeth Goddard is a muliti-published and award-winning author. We happen to be published by the same publisher--Baker/Revell Books. She also writes for Harlequin's Inspirational line--Love Inspired Suspense. Here's Elizabeth's story in her own words:

A reader once told me that when she feels down, she picks up one of my books. She knows it will take her away from her troubles, at least for a while. That made me smile because I understand the need to ride on the winds of imagination. As a reader, I enjoy a novel that will whisk me away to another time and place.

I’ve often heard this response to my novels, which confirms what my ministry of words is about—telling stories set in unique locations and filled with adventure and suspense. Stories that infuse with a sense of hope and redemption. Stories that leave you with a spiritual nugget to take away.

Isn’t that what Jesus did when He told His parables?

Elizabeth's Story

I’m a seventh-generation Texan and grew up in a small town in East Texas once considered the world’s richest acre because of the oil produced on one acre downtown. There were so many oil pumps in my hometown that every night their gentle hum lulled me to sleep.

For a brief few years I lived in Oregon, the setting from which I draw many of my stories. God placed the desire to write within me from an early age. That, along with the love of reading, of course. My mother kept bookshelves filled with books she loved reading as girl, passing that love down to her daughter. Others influenced my life, as well. My third grade teacher read Mrs. Piggle Wiggle to the class—such a beloved and zany story—I couldn’t wait to share it with my children. Only two years later I tackled two adult novels: 2001 A Space Odyssey (admittedly it took five tries before I made it through) and The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. I remember spending entire summers doing nothing but reading novels, and sometimes reading the ones I loved more than once!

In addition to reading voraciously, I wrote poetry and numerous stories, even starting my first romance novel at fourteen. My English teachers entered me in UIL creative writing contests, so I’ve been writing off and on for years. But it wasn’t until 2001, when I had three small children at home, that I began to seriously pursue writing a novel for publication. That’s been a few years ago and now my kiddoes (add another one to the mix for a total of four) are mostly all grown,  and I’m still writing and going strong!

I have the Lord to thank for giving me the dream to write novels and for making it come true. My stories have been finalists in contests, but in 2011, my romantic mystery The Camera Never Lies won the prestigious Carol Award in the mystery category. I thank my Lord and Savior for installing this creative gift within me and letting me use it in such a big way. I encourage you to dream big, and follow those dreams He gives you.

Now onto our interview:

Me: When did you start writing?

Elizabeth: I’ve always been a writer at heart, but I didn’t start pursuing publication until I became a stay-at-home mom. I spent my twenties traveling the country for my job, and I think I had a hard time letting go of a business mindset, and it was then I turned that secret dream of being a writer—a dream God planted in my heart. In 2001, I joined the then-fledgling organization, American Christian Romance Writers—now ACFW (fiction writers versus romance writers). I joined am ACFW critique group which turned out to be such a blessing. All the writers in the group are now multi-published authors. My signed my first contract in 2006 and that means this year I’ve been in publishing for twenty years!

Me: Why romantic suspense novels?

Elizabeth: I’ve always loved reading them and I think that started with my love of the gothic novels written by Daphne Du Maurier, the Bronte sisters, Phyllis A. Whitney and Victoria Holt. Intrigue and suspense and a bit of romance mixed in. In my opinion, romantic suspense novels have everything you could want!

Me: What’s the hardest part of writing romantic suspense?

Elizabeth: There are a lot of hard parts of any kind of writing! Balancing writing and life for one, but I think for romantic suspense, the hardest part of me is just starting. Where do I start the story so that the readers will connect immediately with my heroine. Right after I answer these questions, I’m going to dive into my first chapter of a brand-new book. I don’t like to do an information dump but let the reader discover the backstory as they read.  A romantic suspense has to carry a lot of layers—all the suspense and mystery (if there is a mystery), faith elements since I’m a Christian writing for that market, and the romance. I don’t want the romance to be heavier than the suspense and I try to write 50/50 romance and suspense.

Me: How long does it generally take you to write a novel?

Elizabeth: I guess the bigger question is what do you mean by “write a novel”? Define a novel—the rough draft or a publishable manuscript? Ha ha! I recently took a course on “how to write a novel in 30 days” because I thought---hey, I need to know what their secret is. Turns out, that the writer researched and plotted for six months and then the actual writing took thirty days. For me, I consider all parts of the writing process to include—letting the premise brew, thinking about the characters and on and on, so I’m doing that even while I’m writing on the book that comes before.

But I get that you’re asking how long it takes me once I sit down and put my mind to it. If I didn’t have interruptions in life, it might take me a month to write the first draft, and then more time to polish and edit, but life. . . right? We have to live it. I write a messy, rough draft over about three months (because I’m not glued to the chair), and then the last month before it’s due, I’m going through and editing and polishing and spend many hours a day on that part, and it’s very intense. I don’t care if I’m given nine months to write a book, this last month or two before it’s due, I’m going to be glued to the chair to make sure the rough draft is polished and is a “publishable” story before I turn it in. Then, of course, it goes through multiple edits via my publisher. How’s that for an answer? Short answer. One to two months for the rough. More months for the polish.

Me: Oh, wow! Are you a pantser or plotter or somewhere in between?

Elizabeth: I definitely lean more toward pantsing. I usually begin with a strong premise, a few loose turning point possibilities (nothing set in stone), and a sense of where the story is headed, but I also leave room for discovery along the way. I’m always thinking ahead to what would work and coming up with scene ideas and possible twists. Some of the best twists and emotional moments happen while I’m in the middle of writing---and more often, while I’m washing dishes! I give myself a lot of room to change course.

Me: That's amazing. What would you fear the most if Homeland Security went through your computer?

Elizabeth: Ha ha! What a great question. Honestly my biggest fear would be their complete and utter surprise that someone like me could even write the stories I write, and I’m sure they’d probably just laugh off all my research.

Me: What’s the most rewarding or frustrating thing about writing?

Elizabeth: The most rewarding part is hearing from readers who connected with a story—especially when they say a book encouraged them, gave them hope, or stayed with them after they finished. I love it when I hear “I loved it” or “It’s unputdownable”—those words really set my heart soaring. The most frustrating part is trying to translate the story in my head onto the page exactly the way I imagine it—I have such great ideas but getting that on the page often feels impossible.

Me: What are you working on now?

Elizabeth: As mentioned earlier, I’m about to dive into writing a new book—Mercy Ridge book 3, with a tentative title of Where the Fault Lies. I LOVE that title. Doesn’t it just give you goosebumps? I loved writing the Hidden Bay Series, but now I’m already on book 3 of a brand-new series. My stories often feature rugged landscapes, hidden danger, and characters who must face both external threats and personal wounds. I’m always drawn to settings where the beauty is breathtaking—and so is the danger. The Mercy Ridge series is set in the Cascade Mountains—but wait. . ., let’s talk about my current book. Next question . . .

Me: Tell us about your current book.

Elizabeth: My current book is DEADLY CURRENTS, book 3 in my Hidden Bay series, set on the Washington Coast. I love the Hidden Bay series and honestly, after writing Missing in Alaska, I was afraid that readers wouldn’t love the new series as much, but they do and even more, I think. My editor loved it the best in the series. I had so much fun writing it and was afraid I might have stepped out of my lane, but nope—it worked well!

Deadly Currents follows investigative journalist Cressida Dane as she arrives in Hidden Bay to complete her late father’s manuscript on shipwrecks. While looking into the mystery of the ghost ship Specter’s Bounty, she uncovers secrets that put her in serious danger. County detective Braden Sanders is assigned to protect her, but as they dig deeper, they realize the truth is far more dangerous than either of them expected. It’s a story of buried secrets, rising danger, and romance forged in the middle of danger. I hope you love the surprise ending! Let me know!

Me: Anything you want to add?

Elizabeth: I’m grateful every time a reader picks up one of my books. Writing romantic suspense is more than telling an exciting story for me—it’s about weaving hope, courage, and faith into the middle of danger and uncertainty. Life can feel that way sometimes too, and I love reminding readers that even in the darkest moments, God is still at work.

REVIEW: Perilous Tides by Elizabeth Goddard

Hi, Marji Laine here. I have been reading books by Elizabeth Goddard for almost a decade, and she never fails to totally wow me! The same can be said about PERILOUS TIDES.

Ferry leaving Seattle for Bremerton

Her newest story begins in a place of my worst nightmares. Not the northwest—Washington is lovely—but being locked in a car that is sinking in the Puget Sound! I had to deal with serious horror as I read through the first chapter of PERILOUS TIDES. Talk about suspense! Wow! And oh, so good!

Beth is a master at the details and allows the reader to live through the story as well and better than some of the greatest suspense writers of our time. The research she does is amazing! For this book, it’s forensic science. I almost feel like I could be a forensic scientist after living in the skin of one for this ten-hour suspense-filled vacay. (Well, if I could draw worth beans! Lol!)

About the research, Mrs. Goddard says, “I based Jo and her mother off a real mother and daughter forensic art team who possessed a unique gift for portraying criminal depictions with extraordinary accuracy, so most of what I used to created Jo and write about her skills I gathered from this specific research.” So cool!

Jo is a wonderful character, rich and deep with layers of experience. “Jo’s experiences, her battles as well as the secrets and answers she discovers along the way, give her a strong sense of who she is and what her real purpose is as someone who will fight for justice against all odds, no matter the cost.” I really like her character, especially how smart she is.

And I like the romantic confusion between her and her ex-boyfriend, Cole Mercer. That tension is palpable between them. I have to say, second-chance romance is one of my favorite tropes. Mrs. Goddard says, “I love second-chance romances, especially in romantic suspense. If the hero and heroine already have feelings for each other—good or bad—that gives the romance plot of the suspense novel a running start.”

The romance does start at an unexpected sprint, but the suspense races right alongside it. I don't want to give too much away, but history becomes vivid—events that I lived through and remember so clearly. I love how each detail has purpose!

I also love that a couple of characters from the first book of the series play an important role in this one. I always like the revisits from past main characters. And I hope there is a future main character in this book. There’s a detective in this story that lays his life on the line to help Cole and Jo even though he doesn’t know them very well. I’m hoping we get to see him again. He deserves his happy ending too.

This is a strong suspense! One of my favorite so far this year, right up there with Patricia Bradley, Nancy Mehl, and Lisa Phillips. Here’s a little more about it:

High-Stakes Romantic Suspense from USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard

Three years after her mother's suspicious death, forensic artist Jo Cattrel is in hiding, working at a storm-watching lodge along the Washington coast. When her father sends her a disturbing and cryptic message, Jo leaves the safety of the lodge to find him. But during the ferry crossing, Jo witnesses a murder--and becomes a target.

More surprising to Jo than being in danger is the identity of the person who steps in to protect her--none other than her ex, former Green Beret Cole Mercer. Now a private investigator, Cole has been looking into her mother's death. If he can just uncover the truth, maybe Jo can end her self-imposed captivity and the two of them can pick up the pieces and build a future together.

As Cole and Jo search for answers, the past rushes in like a dangerous tide before the truth can be revealed.

What's HOT in Inspirational Suspense

Wondering what's new in inspirational suspense and mystery? Elizabeth Goddard has a new suspense, Storm Warning, book #1 of the Hidden Bay series, recently released from Revell Publishing. Here's a little bit about the story:

Haunted by a half-forgotten past, former army photographer Remi Grant works at an isolated storm-watching lodge on the rugged Washington coast when she receives a mysterious puzzle piece. This piece might hold the key to unlocking a disturbing incident she struggles to remember—an event that drove her into hiding. As heavy storms approach, Remi must focus on the present rather than dwell on the past.

When a mysterious man at the lodge saves her life twice, Remi becomes suspicious and confronts him. Former military pilot Hawk Beckett, seeking perspective after a personal catastrophe at his commanding officer's suggestion, finds himself caught in the fiercest storm to hit the coast in a decade. As they face the storm together, they discover they're not alone at the lodge.

REVIEW and GIVEAWAY!

Marji Laine here! I just had the most wonderful day, enjoying a brand new book!

Elizabeth Goddard’s new release, STORM  WARNING, is a masterfully written suspense full of expansive twists and unexpected curves. To use the water theme that runs throughout the story, think about a flash flood that diverts suddenly against debris. Then the sheer force of the water shoves through all barriers.

That was the plot of this story. It didn’t just trickle in. It started in the prologue with a violence that grabbed me. Then it gripped again in chapter one. (Seriously, I kept having to remind myself to breath during that scene!) And after several hours, when the intensity grew even more, I could sense that the end was near, a huge apex was growing. But I was wrong – I was only in chapter 10 of 40-something. The author kept the tension amped up and growing throughout the entire story. Every high point was perfectly calculated and lasted just long enough before giving the characters a breath and allowing me to take one as well.

Speaking of the characters, plainly, there is target on the back of Remi Grant, the manager of an isolated lodge on the coast of Washington. While storm watching is the main pastime at this retreat, the storm that’s brewing outside the windows of the lodge doesn’t hold a candle to the internal storm within Remi that is poised to overwhelm her.

Her forgotten past is the problem for her. And it has someone trying to kill her. Her goal, as it should be, is to remember what her mind has blocked in order to identify the who and why of the attacks against her. But she’s not even scratching the surface on the issue.

Her new acquaintance, the “lumberjack,” just happens to arrive on the scene in the nick of time to save her life. Could he have something to do with mounting attacks against her?

Her “lumberjack,” Hawk Beckett, has issues of his own that need resolution. His friend suggested this place, as its very isolation could give him a chance to find what he’s searching for. And in truth, the stormy waves crashing against the rocks below him and the wind threatening to knock him over vie against the torrent of deep regret and shame that roils through him over and over again. But when he finds a girl about to fall to her death, instinct and training kick in. Besides, there’s something about this girl. Something more than the fact that someone had tried to kill her.

These two characters are great together. They alternate between trust and suspicion, secrets and openness, confidence and vulnerability. They are presented with such an authenticity; as real as people I actually know. Having finished the book, I want to know more about them and the others at the lodge!

And speaking of the lodge, that is just one of the intriguing settings from this book. I am convinced that Elizabeth Goddard has visited the Washington cliffs during storm season. Her descriptions are so intense and have such depth that I bet she has also climbed a hanging ladder, taken a pre-storm helicopter ride, and maybe even visited a “SquatchCon” event. (That setting was a particular favorite of mine! LOL!)

I can’t recommend this book enough! If you are a fan of the tingling that tightens your shoulders during a good suspense, you’re going to LOVE this book! There’s even a tricky little mystery here (well a tricky big one) that can take you one direction before shooting you the other way. I LOVE a good mystery, and this one is just right!

STORM WARNING is available in e-book, paperback, a library hardback, and an audiobook. I enjoyed it as I crocheted my coming grandbaby’s blanket on audiobook. (My favorite way to enjoy a book.)

Get your copy HERE! I hope you LOVE it!

And speaking of loving great suspense. What book would you recommend right now? Or maybe you have one on your bedside table just waiting for you? Share the title and author in the comments and why you’re excited about it. You just might win a free e-copy of another favorite of mine from Elizabeth Goddard, BURIED. It was the first one of hers that I read and had me hooked on her books ever after!

BOOK REVIEW: Never Let Go by Elizabeth Goddard

Never Let Go didn't let go!

Elizabeth Goddard takes the torn and frayed strand of family, the bare remains of trust, and the dedicated perseverance of one woman to weave together an intense suspense. The plot is as deep as the Montana wilderness that acts as the setting. And as active. While an bird's eye view might show little in the way of motion or drama in that place, amidst the trees a completely different story is taking place.

The story is riveting; I finished it in 3 evenings. The antagonistic element completely eluded me, but the details all connected up. I hadn't made the connections because I didn't look closely enough at what was going on underneath the treetops.

The romance was also engaging. Willow and Austin made excellent use-to-bees. Very believable and with a chemistry that was palpable.

Make sure you have a little free time set aside for this one. You won't want to put it down once you get started!

Here's a little about the book, and click the cover for a direct buylink:

As a forensic genealogist, Willow Anderson is following in her late grandfather's footsteps in her quest for answers about a baby abducted from the hospital more than twenty years ago. The case may be cold, but things are about to heat up when someone makes an attempt on her life to keep her from discovering the truth.

Ex-FBI agent--and Willow's ex-flame--Austin McKade readily offers his help to protect the woman he never should have let get away. Together they'll follow where the clues lead them, even if it means Austin must face the past he's spent much of his life trying to forget. And even if it puts Willow's tender heart at risk.

In this fast-paced and emotional page-turner, USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard keeps the stakes high, the romantic tension sparking, and the outcome uncertain until the very end.

With only a few hours available each night to read, I think I got through this fifty-something-chapter read in only six hours. Well, a little over. Such is the case with such intense suspense.

What's the fastest you've finished a full novel? Share your thoughts about it in the comment section and you might just win one of my books.

A VISIT WITH ELIZABETH GODDARD

By Patricia Bradley

I am so excited to interview Elizabeth Goddard on our blog today. Before she got so crazy busy with writing, she was a Suspense Sister and I'm always looking for ways to lure her back. lol. But I understand deadlines and so I kinda understand why she left us.

Okay...last week, Deadly Target, book two in the Rocky Mountain series about three childhood friends, Terra, Erin, and Alex released, and I'm here to tell you, it kept me reading past one two nights in a row to finish it.

Criminal psychologist Erin Larson's dreams of a successful career come to a screeching halt when she nearly loses her own life in a boating accident on Puget Sound and then learns that her mother tried to commit suicide. She leaves her job as a criminal psychologist to care for her mother in Montana. At least she is able to produce her podcast, which focuses on solving missing persons cold cases.

Nathan Campbell's father was investigating such a case when he was shot, and now Nathan needs to enlist Erin's help to solve the case. She's good at what she does. The only problem? She's his ex.

As the two dig deeper, it becomes clear that they, too, are being targeted--and that the answers to their questions are buried deep within the past Erin struggles to explain and longs to forget.

The race is on for the truth in this gripping and complex tale of suspense, intrigue, and murder from USA Today bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard.

Elizabeth, you're a native Texan, but the series takes place in the Montana mountains. Can tell us a little about why you chose Montana?

Yes, I am a native Texan, but I’ve traveled extensively and lived in six states, and currently reside in Washington state. My husband is a Montanan, so I already had a lot of knowledge about Montana and a ready resource in him. As for the locations in the Rocky Mountain Courage series, I created a fictional setting for the stories, but I’ve also been to other locations mentioned, including Boston in Deadly Target, and I live near Puget Sound/Seattle area. Anything else that I didn’t know from firsthand knowledge, I relied on the usual research—books, Internet, YouTube, experts.

Yes, research. What did you learn in doing research for Deadly Target?

Erin is a criminal psychologist who has a crime podcast so I researched and learned a lot about that! I had to listen to several to understand how they worked and to write that additional layer in the story, but before writing this story, I had never listened to a crime podcast. I also took a deeper dive into criminal psychology and all that field of study entails.

When I listened to crime podcasts, one, in particular, brought me to tears and it took me days to get over it. I think that writing suspense can often take us to dark places in order to find the most accurate portrayal of crime and the evils of this world and researching for Deadly Target was no exception.

Oh, wow. Sometimes it's hard for a writer to put her head into the criminal's mind! so what was the fun part about writing Deadly Target?

I had the most fun twisting up the plot. I had ideas in my head about the way I wanted to unfold the layers, and I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off.

Oh, you pulled it off, all right! That book hooked me from the get-go! What's the biggest obstacle you face in writing?

Right now, my biggest challenge is finding the time to write and give my novels the love and care they need. I’m juggling a lot in my life with a big move a few weeks ago and a special needs son, and time is the most valuable commodity. I’m fortunate to have enough experience that I have the rhythm of my stories down, so that helps.

So, what's next for your readers?

Critical Alliance, Rocky Mountain Courage 3 will release next year. I’m working on a new series set in Alaska for Revell, and I also write for Love Inspired Suspense and two books a year release with them.

You are very busy! Thanks for taking the time to visit with us today!

Readers--leave a comment and I'll enter you in a drawing for a copy of Deadly Target! Winner announced next Friday here in the comments. (Must have Continental US Address) And leave your contact information!

Oh, and I'm reviewing Deadly Target on my blog today! Leave a comment and you get two entries for a drawing of Present Danger (That's what I'm giving away on my blog) and Deadly Target!

After he almost killed a child, former FBI sniper Lincoln Steele couldn't bring himself to fire a gun, which had deadly and unforeseen consequences for his best friend. Crushed beneath a load of guilt, Linc is working at Melrose Estate as an interpretive ranger.

But as danger closes in on Ainsley during her murder investigation, Linc will have to find the courage to protect her. The only question is, will it be too little, too late?

Award-winning author Patricia Bradley continues her Natchez Trace Park Rangers series with a story about how good must prevail when evil just won't quit.

Talking to Elizabeth Goddard

 by Patricia Bradley

Today I'm excited to be talking to Elizabeth Goddard about her new release Present Danger! (And Friday, I'll be giving a review of it on my blog at ptbradley.com/blog--Spoiler alert--I loved it)

Former FBI Special Agent Jack Tanner is working as a detective in Montana when he comes across a body in the national forest during a search and rescue mission. He's committed to finding the killer, even if it means working alongside his old flame, US Forest Service Special Agent Terra Connors.

When Terra discovers that the murder victim had ties to a powerful and dangerous trafficker of archaeological artifacts, the investigation takes a deadly turn--one that hits too close to home. As Terra fears she lacks the courage to face what comes next, Jack is more determined than ever to protect her. But he's failed her before. And if he fails this time, it will cost them far more than just their hearts.

Join bestselling and award-winning author Elizabeth Goddard as she plunges you into a web of deceit made of hidden crimes, open threats, and long-buried family secrets in this gripping first book of an explosive new series.

When I thought about interviewing Elizabeth, I wanted to do something different, so I asked her three questions and she was gracious enough to reply.

1. Elizabeth, why did you start writing?

Since I was a young child I always loved to read and to make up stories. I spent entire summers reading and some books I re-read. I seemed to excel at writing in school, and somewhere along the way, I recognized there was a burning desire to write inside of me.

I have to get credit where credit is due—God put that desire inside of me. He gave me the dream, and then made it come true. I felt His call on my life but ran from it for a few years until in 2001, I purchased a devotional that helped people work through answering the question about God’s call on their life.

I also signed up to attend a writer’s conference and, wouldn’t you know it, before I even attended the conference, I accepted God’s call on my life to write. I joined ACFW and a critique group and started submitting a chapter a week. I have never looked back, and I’m so glad I answered His call.

I'm so glad you did. I have enjoyed everyone one of your books! And thank you for allowing me to endorse this one!

2. Elizabeth, what draws you to the mountains for settings?

When I was growing up, we always took vacations in Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. I grew up in East Texas and it’s pretty flat, so we’d make the long drive and spend time in the stunning mountains. I think I got the love of those settings from my parents and those trips. But I don’t just love the mountains, I love the rocky ocean beaches and the redwoods . . . anything that’s awe-inspiring. I can’t say exactly why a beautiful natural setting inspires me, but when I experience something beautiful in God’s creation, I want to write a story so I can spend more time there and I want to share that experience and place with others as well.

I know exactly what you mean. It's like a beautiful sunrise forms a story and it's bursting to get out.

3. Which character in Present Danger is most like you?

Ha! I don’t usually write characters like me, but in this case, I would have to say Terra because she loves the forest.

I loved Tara. And she did love her forest. Thanks for joining us today, Elizabeth.

Okay, Suspense Sisters' readers, you can find links to purchase Present Danger here, and if you'll leave a comment, I'll enter you in a drawing for the book. The winner will be announced next Wednesday in the comments.

A Writer's Life

 by Patricia Bradley

A while back I decided to try my hand at writing a shorter romantic suspense novel for Love Inspired Suspense. So I put together a proposal after reading a couple of LIS books and sent it off to my agent.

Then I read more LIS book and thought Uh, Oh ...can I catch that proposal before it hits a LIS editor's desk? Nope. It was too late. The chapters I emailed in the proposal did not start off with the hero and heroine in jeopardy. That's a must for a Love Inspired Suspense book.

*Sigh* At least the editor was amenable to me reworking the proposal since I realized my mistake. All this to say, if you're a writer and you're targeting a particular publishing house, be sure to read a LOT of their books.

What I discovered was, the hero and heroine must meet in the first chapter and be in jeopardy. No cute meet here. They are immediately thrown into danger and the reader is left on tenterhooks as they escape.

And the jeopardy is always there, hanging over the couple. Once they're on their journey to capture the bad guys, they encounter them about every chapter, until the end where they overcome the villain(s). Oh, and while they're battling the villain, they are also falling in love, and battling that as well. The writer needs a good reason why they can't be together, but not such a good reason that they can't overcome it.

If you're like me and targeting Harlequin's Loved Inspired Suspense,  or you're looking for a great suspenseful story, look no further for good examples than the Suspense Sisters! Here are some perfect examples of what LIS is looking for:

A dangerous reunion they may not survive

In this Mount Shasta Secrets novel

FBI agent Tori Peterson intends to find her sister’s murderer, even if someone’s willing to kill her to keep the truth hidden. But that means returning home and working with the lead detective—her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Bradley. Though sparks still fly between them, Tori and Ryan must stay focused on catching a killer…before they are silenced for good.

You can buy it here.

An Amish woman targeted by a serial killer

is the only living witness…

As the sole woman to escape the Dead of Night Killer, Catherine Fisher’s the key to catching him—if he doesn’t kill her first. Now it’s up to FBI agent Sutter Brenneman to protect her. But with her memory missing and all clues indicating the serial killer took her for very personal reasons, it’ll take everything Sutter has to keep her safe.

You can buy it here.

From a dangerous reunion at sea…

To undercover as husband and wife.

Forced to jump ship during her investigation, undercover DEA agent Grace Young’s rescued from criminals and raging waters by her ex-husband, Coast Guard swimmer Dakota Young. Now to save the mission, Grace and Dakota must pose as a married couple to take down a drug ring. But will facing danger together reunite two broken hearts—or place targets on both of their backs?

You can buy it here.

I hope you've enjoyed my journey into publishing. I'll let you know if Love Inspired Suspense likes my new proposal.

Leave a comment telling me if you've ever ventured into a new area and had to learn a new way of doing something, and I'll enter you in a drawing for a digital copy of one of the LIS books listed. Be sure to leave your contact information.

Interview with Elizabeth Goddard

by Patricia Bradley

Actually, we're interviewing Elizabeth Goddard's character, Willow Anderson, the heroine of her new Uncommon Justice Books. The first book in the series is Never Let Go

Me: Willow, it’s a new year. What do you wish someone had told you at the beginning of last year?

Willow: That I needed to spend more time with my grandfather. Cherish him. Tell him and show him how
much I love him. Better yet, I need to prevent the events that led to tragedy.

Me: You’ve followed in your grandfather’s footsteps. Do you think you’ve turned out the way he expected?

Willow: He spent years training me to take over in his forensic genealogy business, so I hope I don’t let him down. But I honestly don’t think I have his gift to find clues and follow leads that others miss. That scares me because the last thing I want is to be less than what he hoped for.

Me: What’s the worst thing that happened in your life and what did you learn from it?

Willow: My parents were killed when I was young and so my grandfather raised me. I still miss them and still wonder why they died. I learned that I need to trust God no matter what, and I’m still trying to do that.

Me: What do you believe about God?
Willow: That He’s always with us, no matter what we’re going through. That He is my rock, and that He will never let go.

Me: Former FBI Agent Austin McKade is your ex-flame…what do regret most about your breakup?
Willow: I wish I hadn’t let so many things come between us. Things that now seem so unimportant, so trivial. Look at the time we’ve wasted being apart.

Me: If you had a ‘snow’ day with no responsibilities and your only mission was to enjoy yourself, what would you do?
Willow: Get lost in a historical novel.
Me, too! :-)

Me: Tell us a little bit about this book you’re starring in.
Willow: Here’s the blurb:

In this fast-paced and emotional page-turner, bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard keeps the stakes high, the romantic tension sparking, and the outcome uncertain until the very end.

Me: What do you want the reader to take away?

Willow: A happy sigh of satisfaction, and to know that God is with us.

Thank you so much for joining us today! Elizabeth is giving away a copy of Never Let Go to one lucky commenter.
