BOOK REVIEW: FATAL WITNESS by Suspense Sister Patricia Bradley

Marji Laine here.
Since reading Counter Attack a few months ago, the first book in the Pearl River series, I have been so excited, anticipating book 2 of the series. I was not disappointed.

Fatal Witness starts off like a rocket. I was gripped from the first sentence from the perspective of a frightened child. The twists and turns in this story carried me along like a roller coaster. And I love how Patricia Bradley teases with false security from time to time.

She has a rhythm to her writing that gives just enough tension before allowing for a breath. I found myself heaving great sighs at the end of each suspenseful scene.

The characters of Danielle Bennet and Mark Lassiter are strong protagonists, especially against a large cast of possible enemies. And yes, I think I had almost everyone on my suspect list at one time or other. And no, I didn’t see the ending coming! Well done, Patricia Bradley!

However, I have to mention some charming secondary characters who practically stole the show. Gem, the German Shepherd police dog who belongs to Mark is delightfully playful when she’s not “working.” And Lizi, Dani’s Puli, is intriguing. I had to stop and find pictures of a Puli to fully see this dog in my mind’s eye. They really do resemble a group of four mops with a moppish head. I have no idea how they see through all of those dreadlocks, but they are darling! Patricia Bradley has a talent for details that makes her stories come to life in a unique way!

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one other character – so detailed in her description that I feel I know her. Mae Richmond is a septuagenarian potter who insists on living alone in her mountain home above Pearl Springs. She’s firey and direct, but full of compassion and devotion for her friends and family. What a spark to add to this story! I LOVED her.

In fact, I loved everything about this story. Except when I got to the end and there was no more to read! I’m anxiously awaiting book 3 from Pearl Springs!

Here’s a little more about Fatal Witness:

As a child, artist and potter Dani Bennett witnessed the brutal murder of her parents. With no memory of the incident or her true identity, she was forced to take on a new name and a new life, hidden away in Montana for the past 25 years.

Mae Richmond has spent the same stretch of time searching for her granddaughter, who went missing the night her daughter and son-in-law were murdered. Convinced the woman she saw in a pottery magazine feature is the woman she's been searching for, she enlists the help of K-9 officer Mark Lassiter of Pearl Springs, Tennessee, who tracks Dani down.

Skeptical but curious, Dani sets out on a journey to uncover the secrets of her past and reclaim her true identity. But someone close to her is determined to keep the truth of what happened all those years ago hidden.

Fatal Witness is available in e-book as well as paperback and also as an Audible audiobook. I highly recommend the audiobook! Tantor Audio always does an outstanding job on their books and narrator, Ann Richardson, is downright brilliant with her renderings of the characters!

You can find Fatal Witness at all major bookstores, but here is the Amazon link.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING....and giving away a free book!

What are your plans for tomorrow? A quiet, peaceful day? Heading somewhere for your Thanksgiving celebration? Or getting ready to host some family or friends at your own house?

We always host the big holidays here, so you can imagine what today is like.  Cleaning, advance food prep (pies and more pies!) and planning out tomorrow in fifteen-minute increments for food prep before serving dinner at four in the afternoon.

Our daughter is an amazing cook, though, so it's such a blessing to be able to share the tasks. But by the time we serve, I just want to find a quiet corner and put my feet up!

Thus, this is a quick post, but I'd like to mention
FINAL CHANCE, my November release. It's an inspirational romantic suspense.

Here's a quick blurb:

Arson. Attempted murder. And Kris Donaldson is the prime suspect. Why won't anyone believe she's innocent?

After years on the run from an abusive ex, Kris receives an unexpected inheritance, an acreage in the Rockies near a small, quaint mountain town. It's her dream come true--a chance to establish an animal rescue and finally lead a peaceful life. Perhaps there's even a chance of forever-after with the intriguing rancher next door.

But her dreams might just prove fatal. A stalker will stop at nothing to destroy her new life. The threats are mounting. She's being framed for heinous crimes. Her reputation, happiness, and in the end, her life is on the line. As always, she can simply cut her losses and run. But this time, there's too much at stake.

This time, she's going to stay.

INTERVIEW WITH MARY ALFORD

We are so happy to have Mary Alford with us today.  Read on, and don't forget--those who leave a comment will have a chance at winning her book, Framed for Murder!
1.  Tell us a little about yourself and your newest book.
MA: Thanks, Roxanne. I’m happy to be here today. I started reading suspense at a very young age. I think shortly after I learned to read well. Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, anything I could find at the local library, I’d devour. As a pre-teen, I graduated to reading Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and I loved them and the genre. I tried my hand at writing back then, but I confess, I didn’t take it serious enough until much later in life when I entered the Love Inspired Speed Dating contest and later got the call for Forgotten Past.
Framed For Murder, my October Love Inspired Suspense, is about a CIA agent who is framed for killing her partner. Liz Ramirez must flee for her life in order to find the evidence her deceased partner left behind in a remote cabin in Alaska. But trying to stay alive long enough to find the evidence will be a near impossible task alone. Her future depends on convincing Aaron Foster, her commander, to go rogue and help her. On the run from the rest of her team and the gun dealers who are convinced she knows the location of their missing weapons, Liz risks losing the proof that would clear her name. But will eluding her pursuers—and trying not to fall for the handsome commander—prove to be fatal?

2.  Give us an insight into your main character, and what inspired you to write this book?
MA: Liz Ramirez is a seasoned CIA agent, but she’s had to endure some heartbreaking events in her personal life. Five years earlier, she lost her husband, a CIA agent, while on a mission. His death has left her crippled emotionally, unable to move on with her life, and so she has thrown herself into her work. But the life and death missions they face daily has taken its toll, especially now that she’s on the run. Aaron Foster is a good friend and Liz trusts her life to him. Working closely with Aaron, Liz finds herself attracted to Aaron. He’s cut from the same cloth as her deceased husband, but will she be betraying her husband by falling in love with Aaron?
Framed For Murder is the third book in the Scorpion Team series. I’m a huge spy fan and I’ve been blessed to be able to write about something that intrigues me. There’s just something about the type of work spies do, the risks they take that is the perfect backdrop for a romantic suspense.

3.  What are you working on at the moment?
MA: I’m currently working on the final two books for the Scorpion Team series. The next book up will be Agent Alex Booth’s story. When Alex gets a call from the sister of his childhood, right away he knows Rachel isn’t calling to catch up. Especially after the way things ended between them. What Rachel has to say is frightening. Her brother, a CIA agent himself has seemingly vanished into thin air. As a former CIA herself, Alex knows Rachel isn’t overreacting. Something bad has happened to Liam.
The final book in the series will be Agent Gavin Dalton’s story and it will take us to coal rich Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, where the truth behind a decade’s old murder is about rise to the surface.

4.   What is your writing schedule like?
MA: It depends on what I’m working on at the time. Currently, I have two very tight deadlines so I am writing two books at the same time. Alex’s story and another Amish Romance. I usually devote the morning to working on one book, then after lunch, I’ll start the second book and work until my eyes tell me I’m done.

5.  What led you to become a writer?
MA: I think I became a writer because I loved all those stories I read as a child and I could see myself writing the same thing. I love taking a story from just an idea to a finished book. It’s a wonderful feeling. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

 6. What is the hardest thing about writing?
MA: Before I became a published author, I received many rejection letters along the way. It can be very discouraging to put your heart and soul into a book and then have someone tell you it’s not good enough. But I think the hardest thing about writing for me is to keep going beyond the rejections. At the time, It would have been so easy to quit and say “oh well”. I’m glad I didn’t.

 7.  What is the easiest thing about writing?
MA: The easiest thing for me is coming up with the ideas. They can be found anywhere. They’re all around in life, whether it’s a story I hear on TV that sparks a thought, or something I read or hear about in a conversation. Yet not all story ideas make it to the finished book. Some just don’t pan out, but the ones that do, well, it’s a very satisfying feeling to be able to write, “The end”.

8. Anything else you'd like to share?  Anything humorous about your writing life?
MA: Every time I think about how close I was to not being able to participate in the Speed Dating contest, I have to smile. At the time of the contest, my husband and I were in Colorado at our cabin where there is no internet availability. So, we grabbed my laptop and ran into town to the Ace Hardware store when I was able to connect long enough to participate. I was so nervous that my hands shook. I’m not sure Emily could understand what I was saying, but she did request a synopsis, followed later by a partial, and a full…and then the call.

Mary Alford was inspired to become a writer after reading romantic suspense greats Victoria Holt and Phyllis Whitney. Soon creating characters and throwing them into dangerous situations that test their faith came naturally for Mary. In 2012 Mary entered the Speed Dating contest hosted by Love Inspired Suspense and later received “the call”. In addition to writing for Love Inspired Suspense, Mary also writes Christian romance and sweet romance. Being a published author has been a dream come true for Mary.
I have a Street Team group that I’m always looking for new members. To find out more, just drop me an email at maryjalfordauthor@gmail.com.

A Chat With Romantic Suspense Author Patricia Bradley

Cozy Mystery Author
Linda Kozar
Step in. Step out. Let's introduce ourselves! My name is Linda. Last name Kozar. And I write cozies, as in mysteries! This is my debut post on Suspense Sisters and I am thrilled to be a part of this stellar group of storytellers.

Gone Without a Trace , is book three in the Logan Point Series, and book two, A Promise to Protect. Book one in the Logan Point Series, Shadows from the Past, has won several awards…the 2008 Maggie (Inspirational Category)…1st Place in the 2012 Touched By Love and Daphne du Maurier contests…finaled in the 2012 Genesis…bronzed in the Frasier. Click here to find out more about the Logan Point Series. Patricia has also written several romances for Harlequin, Matthew's Choice, and The Christmas Campaign. She is an abstinence/healthy relationship speaker and has spoken to many students and adults over the years. When she's not writing or speaking, Patricia likes to throw mud on a wheel and try to make something beautiful.

Suspense Author
Patricia Bradley
Patricia, how did you get started as a writer? Tell us how far back you go.

Oh, my goodness. When I turned 35 I had trouble sleeping. I would go to bed and toss and turn. Then one night as I stared at the ceiling, a man appeared (in my imagination) and he stood at a window with belching smoke stacks in the background. He turned and looked at me and said, “This wasn’t the way my life was supposed to turn out.” He went on to tell me a lot about his life and that’s when I wondered if I could write his story. I bought a Writers Digest magazine and started learning the craft of writing. I started out with short stories and my very first one was published by Woman’s World. I thought I had it made and would soon have a book released. Thirty-two years later, I did.

I adore your tagline: "Where love and faith cross paths with murder!" How did you come up with that? And when did your love of mystery and suspense begin?

I really don’t know where my tagline came from. I was doodling nouns, trying to come up with one and the words sort of just popped into my head. And my love of mystery and suspense began with Agatha Christie and then moved on to Mary Higgins Clarke. I know I must have read Nancy Drew when I was a kid, but for the life of me, I can’t remember it.

Give us a little rundown on the theme of your books and how you transitioned from romance, adding the suspense factor we at Suspense Sisters love so much.

In addition to the books mentioned above, I also have a novella, The Gingerbread Pony, that was in anthology that twelve of the Heartwarming authors got together and wrote. It debuted at #81 on the USA Today Top 150 Books in October of last year. I have written all of these books since January of 2013, plus one more Memphis Cold Case book, Justice Buried. I’m starting books nine and ten.

My overall theme is justice, but each of my books deal with problems we all face, like forgiveness or trust. My last Logan Point book, Silence in the Dark, deals with a missionary running from God, and the first Memphis Cold Case book, Justice Delayed, deals with a woman who has a hard time trusting God after her sister is murdered.

As for transitioning from romance to suspense, it’s the other way around. The suspense comes first. The first draft is almost nothing but the suspense thread, and it’s what I love writing the most. Romance is just so hard for me to write, although it is getting easier.

I never intended to write a strictly romantic book, but in late 2013, my agent, the wonderful Mary Sue Seymour, emailed me that she was meeting with the Harlequin Heartwarming editor in a couple of days and wanted me to send her a story idea and one-sheet.

I took a deep breath and emailed her back that I was in Chattanooga, and if I could come up with an idea on the way home, I’d send her one. Then I prayed, asking God to give me an idea if writing for Heartwarming was in His plan for me. By the time I arrived home, I had a solid plot, the perfect small town and two great characters. Heartwarming eventually bought the story, and that’s when I really learned how to write a romance. I turned in the 293-page manuscript about the time my first Logan Point book released in 2014, and Victoria Curan, the senior editor at Heartwarming then, sent the first revision letter with 269 comments with suggestions on how to fix the story.

Is there a genre you would secretly like to write in but are terrified to do so?

No, romance is scary enough for me. I am actually trying my hand at a cozy mystery which is different from romantic suspense.

How can readers find you?
