Siblings

 by Sharon Dunn

In my book that releases on September 30, Double Protection Duty, siblings who are identical twins are a big part of the story. Austin and Beacon are three-year-olds with dark hair and blue eyes. I remember a twin telling me that she really hated when people assumed that because she and her sister looked alike, they must also have the same talents and preferences. For this reason, I wanted to make sure that Austin and Beacon had distinct personalities. Austin is talkative often speaking for his brother. He is more physical. He prefers to play with cars and building blocks and makes mechanical noises when he plays. Beacon is quieter. If given a choice, he loves to do art and look at picture books. Even if you are not a twin, I think everyone desires to distinguish themselves from their siblings.

I grew up in a family with four sisters and a brother. I am the middle child. The blessing of a big family is that you could always find someone who was up for playing. On the flip side, there was always someone you could pick a fight with. Even though I grew up isolated in the country, I think having so many siblings helped me have decent social and survival skills. My sisters and I played all kinds of imaginative games that I think nurtured my creativity as a writer.  When I was a young adults trying to establish myself in a career and marriage and taking care of growing children, I didn't get together often with my siblings. Now that I am older, I find myself wanting to be with them more. It's come full circle.

How about you? Are you a twin or maybe you have siblings or friends who are twins? How did growing up with siblings shape you as a person? Maybe you were an only child. How did that affect you? Did you have a best friend who was like a sibling?

Leave a comment along with your email address. I will be giving five copies of Double Protection Duty away (USA only).  If you want to learn more about me and my books and sign up for my newsletter where I do more giveaways, you can go to my website at www.sharondunnbooks.net.

  1. I had five sisters and three brothers, and everyone of us have/had distinct personalities. We had fun together when were younger, but fought sometimes too. Twins run in the family, aunts, uncles, and cousins. N/E as I'm reading it now. Beacon and Austin are adorable.

My older sister was the girlie girl. My younger sister was a little of both. My brothers were older. They picked on us but were also protective. deb4christ93@gmail.com

  15. Hubby's sister has a set of twins. Besides being a boy and a girl, they are completely different from each other as can be.
I had one brother who was 4 1/2 years older than me. When very young he was my big bubba and I was the baby sister he needed to protect. That ended about the time he went into junior high and the void between us just grew. As an adult, he was a loner that would disappear years at at time - the longest a little over 10 years. Sadly he died before we could ever really connect again.
Not entering the contest because I was blessed to have already read an ARC. AMAZING five star story! Those selected are in for an awesome read.

  17. I enjoy reading books about twins! I had identical twins as the center aisle ushers in my wedding; my Dad was so nervous, that when he looked out the nursery room window, he asked me if those two guys were brothers! (Yeah, Dad! TWINS!) badawson16 at AOL dot com

  19. I have two sisters and had a brother growing up. I am the oldest. Being the oldest, I often had to watch the others and be more responsible. I was like a second mom to my baby sister who was 10 years younger. I shared a room with the sister just 2 years younger than me which did not always make things harmonious. My brother was 5 years younger than me. We had a lot of great times growing up but we are all totally different in our likes and abilities. We are all senior citizens now except my brother is no longer with us.

  24. This sounds like a great story. I like how you made the twins different. I agree that people often assume twins are the same because they look alike, but each person is unique 🙂

  25. I have 5 brothers and 1 sister, and I'm in the middle. I became more of the peacemaker since I was in the gap between the older siblings and younger siblings. And yes, while we all share similar personality traits, we are all COMPLETELY different in many ways. It makes for interesting Sunday dinners sometimes. 😄

  27. I have a brother who is nine years older, so I felt like an only child growing up. However, the older we've got, the less I felt the age gap separating us.
