Moving From "I Do It" to "God Do It"

Kristen here. As the mom of a toddler, I’m no stranger to the words, “I do it!” I love watching my son discover skills he can do on his own, such as putting on his shoes, even if they end up on the wrong foot.

Sometimes, his “I do it” attitude is funny, but other times, it reveals a stubborn streak inherent to our human natures. The truth is, he’s not ready to do some things on his own and needs to rely on my help—even if he doesn’t want it.

How often are we like that with God? We tell Him, “I do it” and insist on our way being the right way, even when it isn’t. Sometimes, He gently corrects us, and other times, He lets us faceplant so we recognize how dependent on Him we really are.

In Watch Your Back, private investigator Avery Reynolds falls into the latter category. She believes God walked out on her when her parents did and left her at the mercy of foster care. Stuck in the mindset that she must solve her problems on her own, Avery suffers failure after failure as she sets out to capture Tampa’s elusive mob boss. It’s not until she reaches the end of her rope that she must make the choice to either accept or forever refuse God’s hand that has been reaching out to her all along.

He's reaching out to us as well. In Matthew 11:28-30, Jesus extended this invitation: “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (NKJV). When we try to carry our own burdens, we will fail every time. When we instead follow Jesus and accept what He has for us, we will find the load bearable—because we won’t be carrying it on our own.

Whatever we’re facing today, I hope we’ll shift our mindset from “I do it” to “God do it.” In our own strength, we might fall flat on our faces, but with Him, all things are possible.

What is something God has done for you? Salvation is at the top of my list, but He has done so many other things for me too, including blessing me with my wonderful husband and our sweet son. I'd love to hear what He's done for you. Leave a comment, and I'll give away one Kindle copy of Watch Your Back to a random winner. Be sure to include your email address.

Update: Congratulations to Cyndi N. on winning this giveaway!

  1. Oh. My... great post! It hit a bullseye for me. I'm 78 and accepted the Lord initially at 9 yrs old, and as an adult at 28 yrs old. I can honestly say, to my embarrassment, that it's been a lifetime of trying to really learn Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding, 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Maybe one day I'll really "get it." LOL I won't lie, though, it's hard. And it can be scary. 🥰

  2. What a poignant reminder that we must always rely on God. God has done so much for me too. He led me straight to my husbaand. The one who is taking multiple days off work after i had surgery to wait on me hand and foot. God is doing something in our country and across the globe right now too. It's amazing to watch. Love this. clhutson1016@gmail.com

  4. As an independent widow, I'm used to doing things on my own and it's really hard to let go and let God. I trust Him for most things, but...and that's the catch.

  9. My most recent "God did it!" moment was being able to lead my 5 yr old daughter to the Lord. She prayed and asked Jesus to forgive her sins and take her to Heaven when she dies on August 27th! I have seen several indications since then of it being real and God working in her heart, and I am ecstatic!

  10. God has provided me with great counselors to help with PTSD for the first time in 20 years and I am living with family that accepts me for me not who I was before health issues. I am very thankful and much happier to be safe and at peace.

  12. For me, the one that stands out the most, was when a job situation of Hubby's had us both at our wits end in worry after all we had done seem to get us nowhere. It wasn't until we turned the situation over to God in prayer that we both experienced the kind of peace that neither of us had known and felt that everything would be ok. A change in job came and things turned out more than ok. Thanks to that change over 30 years ago, our retirement is a WHOLE lot better and we have insurance guaranteed for life at a very low minimal cost to us.

  13. Thank you so much for your post and the giveaway! I'm looking forward to reading your book. To answer your question, God has done so much for me over the years, the first and foremost, as you mentioned, is my salvation. I'm forever grateful and praise the Lord for this. Since then, He's taught me so much and brought me to the place where I have learned that I can do nothing without Him. I've struggled with health issues since He drew me to Him and He has and is still teaching me to rely on His strength. He said through Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” He has truly proven this verse to me and I thank Him for this.

  14. I love seeing and experiencing the "God do it" moments in my life. God is so good and has been so good to me. That doesn't mean I've not hurt, had sorrow, had loss. It simply means that I believe God is Soverign, in control, and over all and I believe He is All and in All.

    1. Amen to that, Vera! Troubles, sorrow, and suffering still come, but what a comfort to know God remains sovereign and in control! I cling to that truth as well.

  15. Salvation would also be at the top of my list. The Lord used our dog to save me from an apartment fire that occurred in the early morning hours. I fell down some stairs leading to Lake Erie. I did not go into the lake. To name a few. dpruss@prodigy.net

  17. Thank you for sharing this wonderful article. Yes, at times, it seems that God has left us, and we have to deal with the struggle. But I know that God is always there to guide us through in whatever we are doing.
