Review of Demon: A Memoir by Tosca Lee

Okay, so I realize I am late to the game when it comes to reading Tosca Lee, and for someone who loves suspense as much as I do, it’s a little embarrassing. I picked this book up in September at the ACFW conference. Honestly, the title made me hesitate. Who wouldn’t be a little put off with the idea of reading about a demon? The back cover description left me wanting more, so I set aside my apprehension and dove in. I never expected this book to hit me as hard as it did, but it left me in tears more than once and more importantly, it left me in greater awe of God’s love than I’ve ever experienced before in the pages of a fictional tale.

The book follows Clay, a writer who hasn’t reached the point of publication. One day, a demon approaches him with the opportunity to pen and publish a story bigger than Clay can imagine. As the demon tells the story of creation, the fall, and the redemption offered by the Creator, his perspective breathed fresh awareness of just how deep and wide God’s grace and love for us truly are! The fallen angels were cast out of heaven for joining in the rebellion…for believing that there might be something more worthy of worship than God. Adam and Eve did the same thing in eating the fruit after the promise of being like God themselves, yet God made a way to commune with man. Not only that, but He lowered Himself to wear our corrupted flesh and died as our sacrifice to save us, because there is no way we can save ourselves.

The way the author recounted Creation, the birth of Christ, and the throne of God in heaven made me feel like a witness to the holiness of God. Seeing how the truth that our battle isn’t against flesh and blood gave me a new outlook on the happenings of life. Very seldom does a work of fiction truly change me, but Demon opened my eyes to how great God’s grace has been toward man throughout the ages. How great His grace has been to me

This is my favorite read of 2022, and I’m not sure it will be possible to beat.

Don’t let the title stop you. This book is worth reading more than once.
