INTERVIEW with Suspense Sister Sharon Dunn and a giveaway!

Today I have the honor of interviewing our newest Suspense Sister, Sharon Dunn, who has a brand new romantic suspense, Undercover Mountain Pursuit. Leave Sharon a comment for a chance to win a copy of her latest release. But first, the interview:

ME: If you had to describe yourself in one sentence, what would you say?

SD: An introvert whose faith is quiet but deeply rooted.

ME: What do you do when you’re not writing? Any interesting hobbies?

SD: For the last several years, I have been trying to learn watercolor painting. I’m not naturally artistically minded, and I know the experts say watercolor is the hardest to learn. I have always loved the dreamy quality you can get with watercolor. Plus, I think it’s good to try things that you are not necessarily good at. As far as my paintings go, right now I am just happy if I paint a tree and other people can tell it’s a tree.

ME: What was your favorite book as a teen or child?

SD: Our little country school library had these Nancy Drew mysteries with pink covers. I was entranced by Nancy and her friends for some time. Really, I just loved to read. My parents were not readers, but they did buy a set of encyclopedias for us that came with what was called Childcraft books geared toward younger readers. I know this makes me a total word nerd, but I read most of those books cover to cover. There was one volume in particular that was about story and myth and maybe poetry that I think planted the seeds for me being a writer.

ME: Tell us three things about yourself that might surprise your readers.

SD: I’ve been a widow for almost eight years now. My husband died when I was 49.

My dog is my best friend.

In the last few years, I have learned that slowing down and being still has as much value as getting through a to-do list.

ME: What genre did you start out writing? Have you changed course? Why or why not?

SD: My first books were The Ruby Taylor mysteries which were humorous amateur sleuth. I loved Ruby Taylor as a character and writing in first person. There was a romance element to them, but the mystery was what drove the story. I do an occasional cozy mystery but most of what I write currently is romantic suspense for Love Inspired. All the genres have their merits. As a writer, I am always trying to balance writing what makes my heart flutter with writing what will pay the bills.

ME: Any other genres you’d like to try? If yes, what and why?

SD: Amateur sleuth and cozy have always been my favorite genre. I like a mystery where it’s a puzzle for the reader to solve, dropping clues and lining up suspects. But also, the books are about relationships between friends and family. I wish there was a Christian or just clean market for short stories as well.

ME: If you could go back in time and do something differently at the start of your career, what would it be?

SD: I don’t know that I would do anything different, but I can tell you what surprised me about writing. I thought once I got my first book published my life would change radically. I had this idea that writing careers look like Jessica Fletcher’s from Murder, She Wrote. I had this delusion that once I was published someone else would be mopping my floor and cleaning my toilets while I figured out how big I wanted my swimming pool to be. Now I write full time (I have published over 30 books) and I am still mopping my floors and cleaning my toilets. And I don’t have a swimming pool. Actually, I think that Jessica was so down to earth she still cleaned her own house in Cabot Cove.

ME: What is the most important piece of advice you’d like to give to unpublished authors?

SD: You must be love not with the idea of being published and getting recognition for your work. Instead, what nourishes you should be sitting alone in a room listening to the keyboard click while you create worlds and characters and make sentences sing.

Here's a little bit about UNDERCOVER MOUNTAIN PURSUIT: An undercover assignment turns into a perilous mountain escape. After witnessing a shooting in a remote mountain location, high-risk photographer Willow Farris races to help—and runs into her old flame, Quentin Decker. Undercover to take down an international smuggler, Quentin has a mission to complete. But with Willow in the crosshairs, shielding her takes priority. If they want to bring the criminals to justice, Quentin and Willow must first get off the mountain alive…

And here's a little bit about the author:
Sharon Dunn is USA Today bestselling author with over 30 books to her credit. Her first book Romance Rustlers and Thunderbird Thieves was a Romantic Times Top pick. She is a two time Carol award winner as well as being an award winning playwright and short story writer. As an empty nester and a widow, she is grateful that all three of her children still live close by. She is a dedicated bargain hunter and coupon clipper. Nothing thrills her more than to get a good deal. When she isn’t writing, Sharon loves to enjoy nature by hiking or walking in the park next to her house, spend time with her border collie or read.

A Writer's Life

 by Patricia Bradley

A while back I decided to try my hand at writing a shorter romantic suspense novel for Love Inspired Suspense. So I put together a proposal after reading a couple of LIS books and sent it off to my agent.

Then I read more LIS book and thought Uh, Oh ...can I catch that proposal before it hits a LIS editor's desk? Nope. It was too late. The chapters I emailed in the proposal did not start off with the hero and heroine in jeopardy. That's a must for a Love Inspired Suspense book.

*Sigh* At least the editor was amenable to me reworking the proposal since I realized my mistake. All this to say, if you're a writer and you're targeting a particular publishing house, be sure to read a LOT of their books.

What I discovered was, the hero and heroine must meet in the first chapter and be in jeopardy. No cute meet here. They are immediately thrown into danger and the reader is left on tenterhooks as they escape.

And the jeopardy is always there, hanging over the couple. Once they're on their journey to capture the bad guys, they encounter them about every chapter, until the end where they overcome the villain(s). Oh, and while they're battling the villain, they are also falling in love, and battling that as well. The writer needs a good reason why they can't be together, but not such a good reason that they can't overcome it.

If you're like me and targeting Harlequin's Loved Inspired Suspense,  or you're looking for a great suspenseful story, look no further for good examples than the Suspense Sisters! Here are some perfect examples of what LIS is looking for:

A dangerous reunion they may not survive

In this Mount Shasta Secrets novel

FBI agent Tori Peterson intends to find her sister’s murderer, even if someone’s willing to kill her to keep the truth hidden. But that means returning home and working with the lead detective—her ex-boyfriend, Ryan Bradley. Though sparks still fly between them, Tori and Ryan must stay focused on catching a killer…before they are silenced for good.

You can buy it here.

An Amish woman targeted by a serial killer

is the only living witness…

As the sole woman to escape the Dead of Night Killer, Catherine Fisher’s the key to catching him—if he doesn’t kill her first. Now it’s up to FBI agent Sutter Brenneman to protect her. But with her memory missing and all clues indicating the serial killer took her for very personal reasons, it’ll take everything Sutter has to keep her safe.

You can buy it here.

From a dangerous reunion at sea…

To undercover as husband and wife.

Forced to jump ship during her investigation, undercover DEA agent Grace Young’s rescued from criminals and raging waters by her ex-husband, Coast Guard swimmer Dakota Young. Now to save the mission, Grace and Dakota must pose as a married couple to take down a drug ring. But will facing danger together reunite two broken hearts—or place targets on both of their backs?

You can buy it here.

I hope you've enjoyed my journey into publishing. I'll let you know if Love Inspired Suspense likes my new proposal.

Leave a comment telling me if you've ever ventured into a new area and had to learn a new way of doing something, and I'll enter you in a drawing for a digital copy of one of the LIS books listed. Be sure to leave your contact information.
