Moving forward....or not Roxanne Rustand

I hope this post finds you and your loved ones safe and in good health. We live in a rural state, on a little dead-end country road,  so it is quiet here in any event.
But we've also been trying to follow all of the protocols about staying at home, and social distancing when we can't.  How is all of this going for you?

Have you found yourself tackling projects around your home that you might have been putting off for ages, or just didn't think of?  Are there some "positives" in your life now, given how life might have changed in your part of the country?

For me,  my work is always at home, at my computer,  But I've been reading a lot more, cooking more (who dares go out yet, for dine-in experiences?) And to support some locally owned small restaurants we've done something we'd never done before: now and then we pick up some take-out from a small but wonderful Thai restaurant and take it to a picnic shelter at a shady park.  It has been such fun. Why haven't we been doing this all along?

We've also been doing a lot more gardening. Do you garden? I've always been a failure--at least back when we had a large garden.  Towering weeds were my specialty. But now, we have a number of 10x12 raised bed vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, and also have herbs, tomatoes, and strawberries on our deck.

There too I have a question for myself--why haven't I been growing herbs on the deck for years?  Last night I made chicken and used sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme in the sauce.  It was so much better than with the dried herbs I usually add.

With the extra time you might have at home, have you found yourself developing new interests or pursuing old favorites during this time of pandemic? Have you discovered new authors, or do you have any great books to recommend?

Leave a message and be in a drawing for a free ecopy of  A Montana Legacy

All my best, Roxanne

  2. We live on the outskirts of a little town with a population of less than 3,000 on a little over 7 acres. Since we are retired, we are use to be home. We are extremely grateful for the guaranteed retirement income where so many are struggling financially. As we are get older and health issues continuing, we have been traveling as much as we could in the past couple years. The idea was to see all we could so when we couldn't travel any more, we would have some wonderful memories and not be saying "wish we had". Needless to say all the trips we had planned for this year, including an extended trip we planned over a year on to see the national parks in Utah, have been cancelled.

Thankfully, we have several other interest that we are still able to do in order to keep us entertained and definitely not bored. Hubby and I both love to bake. However, with there only being the two of us, if we baked all the time and being of the generation of waste not - want not, I'd be wider than tall if we baked all the time.

Hubby's been into photography for a few years. I had always been more of point and shot photographer up until our trip last year to the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Mount Rushmore and the Badlands where I wanted better quality photos. During the stay at home, I've been able to fine tune some things and learn how to do others on the camera I bought last year. Living in the Ozark Mountains and most of our property wooded, we have a wide array of daily critter visitors that both entertain us and give us subject matter for our photographs. Thankfully when we downsized and moved to this dream destination 3 years ago, we made sure to include and huge covered front porch to the home we built thinking more outdoor space was important than lots of indoor rooms. So a of the time we are on the porch with cameras ready enjoying the view and waiting for photo opportunities.

Since I enjoy reading, I do a lot of that while sitting under the ceiling fans on the porch too.

Hubby has always loved having his hands in the soil. However, due to medical problems and family responsibilities, it had been a few years since we had been able to have a garden. This year even before all this hit, we had decided this was the year for some fresh maters. We had the rock layers come back out and do our raised bed close to the house. In fact, we can water from our sits on the porch if we want to. :) Hubby worked from late winter to early spring making sure we had good rich fertile soil in the raised bed as well as starting our plants from seeds. The garden is doing amazingly well exceeding our expectations.

  3. While I am growing plants on my suburban patio out back, only some are food-bearing plants--tomatoes, Delicata squash, basil, mint. We've also been successful with bell peppers and okra, but we're not growing them this year. Reading, working jigsaw puzzles, and cooking have been my major activities at home along with some straightening. Since the YMCA is closed, my husband and I have been walking for about 30 minutes each evening. I've loved the slower pace and have enjoyed occasional take-out meals from our favorite restaurants.

  4. We're playing more games as a family and we expanded our garden space just a bit - but other than that, as we were already a homeschooling family and my husband's job didn't change much, the big things stayed mostly the same. We're just staying at home more.

  6. I have planted more plants this year, than I have in several years, and, I'm trying to grow just one tomato plant! :) (The last time I planted tomato plants, the deer came & ate them down to the ground!) My 1 tomato plant is in a "cage" & I tied strips of aluminum foil to the top circle of the cage--so far, (almost a week now!) the plant is intact! :) Badawson16 at aol dot com

  8. Your garden looks lovely. I've enjoyed working outside a lot more in this stay at home season. My dh has been doing house projects, so it was nice for us to get things done. Looking forward to being able to travel around soon, to see family, and doing day trips mainly. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. :)

  9. The major change I have experienced, is the lifting of heaviness. I didn't realize my schedule was so controlling. My priorities have changed. I have let go of some things and embraced new things that I've always wanted to try, but never had the time. Not to mention, I'm cooking more, and liking that. And even finished long forgotten crafts. It's been a time of being honest with myself. What really is important in the scheme of things.

  10. I have thought about doing a lot of things that need to be accomplished, but haven't gotten that much done, mentally I have done a ton of things. I do like to read though.
