Interview with mystery author Nancy Herriman ~ win a copy of her book

First let's hear a bit about the story:

Tell us about your inspiration for this story: On October 8, 1867, a man was sitting outside a building in downtown San Francisco, waiting for a friend. A person dressed as a boy walked past, asked him his name, and upon receiving it tossed acid on the fellow, scarring him and leaving him blind in one eye. A woman the man had married but then shortly thereafter discarded had paid the ‘boy’ to commit the assault. A case of revenge. In the following months, several people decided to copy the crime. Reading about these events gave me the idea for the background story in my newest Mystery of Old San Francisco novel, No Justice for the Deceived. What might happen as a result of such a terrible act? How might the person attacked respond? With their own revenge? Questions I thought were worth answering.

Tell us, Amanda, about your inspiration for this story.
When I was fifteen-years-old, I was first introduced to Emily Dickinson, and she was my favorite poet from that moment on. I studied her off and all through high school and college, and every time I did, I learned something new about her and her work. In 2016, I published my first book involving Emily. In Crime and Poetry, a contemporary magical cozy mystery, my main character solves the murder in the book with clues from Emily’s poems. I did extensive research for the book on Emily and her work. I love historical research and had always wanted to write and historical mystery. Years later, I was trying to think of a hook for my historical story. I knew that I was most comfortable writing about nineteenth century American history because it was my favorite time period to learn about, but I needed something more. That’s when Emily came to my mind again. I wondered if anyone had ever writer a mystery with Emily as a detective. I did some digging and discovered, much to my shock, no one ever had! I knew this was the hook I was looking for and the Emily Dickinson Mysteries were born!

Where do you get the idea for your stories?

Readers love books about books and I totally get it. After all, writers start out as readers! I was looking for a new take on the “books in mystery” theme, one that wasn’t a mystery bookstore or a used bookstore or a any of the other ideas that have already been used. That’s when it hit! I started my publishing career writing romance…a romance bookstore was perfect! That’s how Love Under the Covers, the bookstore owned by my heroine, Lizzie Hale, was born. From there, I just let the fun began. A romance bookstore calls for romance tropes and in book #1 of the new Love is Murder series, I’ve pulled out all the stops on the hot rancher in town idea that will be so familiar to readers of romance. Brody Pierce is everyone’s ideal man—sexy, handsome, successful. But that’s where the romance element ends and the mystery takes over, because Brody ends up dead and Lizzie needs to find out who did it before her aunt is implicated in the crime.

That sounds intriguing. Tell us more about the story:

Lizzie Hale may be the lucky owner of a successful romance bookshop, Love Under the Covers, but she’s decidedly unlucky in love. Though she’s read almost every famous romance novels from Jane Austen to Nora Roberts, not one has helped her figure out how to get—and keep—a man. But Lizzie has bigger problems to worry about.
