Interview with Author Lisa Phillips and a Giveaway!

Kristen here. I'm thrilled to welcome bestselling author Lisa Phillips to the Suspense Sisters blog! Enjoy getting to know Lisa and learning about her latest release, Out of Time, available now. She’s also giving away two copies of the book, so keep reading to the end to learn how to enter the giveaway.

Tell us about your latest release.

Out of Time is book 10 in the Brand of Justice series, a long running thriller series with a single point of view. Kenna Banbury is a private investigator with a tragic past who comes to faith in the series, falls in love, and you see the slow burn romance and how she changes over the series. Along the way she solves some pretty intense cases, and picks up a few new family members.

What was your inspiration for this book?

In Out of Time, Kenna follows a trail that will uncover some of her family history back to the UK, and we see how her parents met. It was very much a natural progression of the stories that have come before. Now there’s a new big, bad threat, and Kenna realizes she’s tangled up in the middle of it. I love visiting family in England, and bringing my own history to the story was so much fun. I usually don’t get to put British things in my novels so it was enjoyable to share that part of me.

What is your favorite part of the writing process? Your least favorite?

My favorite part is the creative thinking, brainstorming and puzzling out ideas and plot threads. I have white boards in my house, and big Post It paper that’s poster size, and scribbling over all of it with different color pens is fun! I like to organize my ideas and dig into the story.

The least part is probably revisions—going back and fixing things is good and necessary, but for some reason I feel like it should come out right the first time! Surprise, that doesn’t happen. Haha.

Tell us three things about yourself that might surprise your readers.

My favorite event of the year is the JustReads Rendezvous. I lead worship for it with Kimberly Woodhouse, and marrying those two parts of my life—ministries as a worship leader and an author—is so fulfilling for me.

I love dogs! Okay, that’s not so much of a surprise. But did you know I never had a dog until I was in my 30s? I’m a late bloomer.

I have two rubber ducks and a potato on my desk.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

What is “not writing”?

Haha. Just kidding (kind of). I love to switch off by watching TV shows like Stargate or Star Trek. Why are the old family shows so much better? I don’t read much, but I try to read a book a week. Lots of thrillers, or historical narrative non-fiction.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a book for Sunrise Publishing called “Rescued Dreams” that releases in October! It’s an action packed romantic suspense story about two firefighters.

Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your time and story with us! Keep reading to learn more about Lisa and how to enter to win a copy of Out of Time

Lisa Phillips is a USA Today and top ten Publishers Weekly bestselling author of over 80 books that span Harlequin’s Love Inspired Suspense line, independently published series romantic suspense, and thriller novels. She’s discovered a penchant for high-stakes stories of mayhem and disaster where you can find made-for-each-other love that always ends in happily ever after.

Lisa is a British ex-pat who grew up an hour outside of London and attended Calvary Chapel Bible College, where she met her husband. He’s from California, but nobody’s perfect. It wasn’t until her Bible College graduation that she figured out she was a writer (someone told her). Lisa is a worship leader, tea aficionado, and dog lover of two crazy Airedales.

Now, here's more about Out of Time.

Up against an enemy unlike anything she’s ever faced.

A simple recon mission in New York City brings a terrible truth to light: their enemy knows every secret Kenna has been hiding. She doesn’t want to accompany Preston to the UK, but doing so might give her the answers she’s been looking for. About everything. All her friends seem to think it’s inevitable she’s going, and when she’s given information about her mother…it just might be.

Her investigation reveals a history she’s never known.

Kenna’s case shines a light into dark parts of her past as she travels to the last place she’d have thought was connected to her history. Her faith and her loyalty to her friends are put to the test. She finds herself with new allies, all alone and on the run, chasing an enemy that could cost her everything she’s found. And the future she wants with Jax.

Now it’s up to her brand of justice to solve this.

For a chance to win a one of two copies of Out of Time, leave a comment answering this question: If someone were to write a thriller novel loosely based on your life, what unique (or special to you) setting would it include?

Be sure to include your email address in your comment. (Please note: Any stateside winners will receive a paperback copy, and international winners will receive an e-book.)

  9. I lived in a small town for just a year that still did not have a dial telephone system. We were on a party line with an operator that connected calls. Our phone number was 9411J…..as in “j” in the alphabet….. yeah, there were 24 people on that particular party line. We didn’t use the phone very much and no privacy! You could get a private line after living there for 5 years. This was in the early 70’s.

  18. Thank you so much for the giveaway! I love your books, Lisa, and it's so great to get to know you better. If anyone were to write a thriller loosely based on my life, they'd have to include a reading nook in my home because that's my favorite thing to do, at least according to my hubby. ;-)

  20. Having a mother who was raised in the hollows of West Virginia and living three hours from there, it would be my chosen setting. Her old house is still standing but empty for nearly 80 years. The old barn is standing as well. The area has become overgrown with trees and brush. No one but hunters walk the remote area. There is no electricity or cell towers. We camped in tents there to explore it 40 years ago. It would make quite the setting due to its remote location.

  21. Thank you for the interview with Lisa Phillips!

If someone wrote a story loosely based on your life, I can think of two things. One, I can't think how it would work into a story, but it was a big part of me at a time - being a clown. What started out as a fan of Emmett Kelly Jr. developed into a great friendship. One that encouraged hubby and me to get behind the grease paint. Once we did, we found out we loved it. Vacations were spend meeting up with Emmett from AZ to GA and AR to MI hauling all our clown gear (clown truck for me and 18" motorcycle for hubby plus costumes and props). Loved working with kids and the elderly plus found out how freeing it was to be unrecognizable. We even clowned for the governor of our state. The second one would me my family lineage mystery. My grandfather on my dad's side migrated to the states from what was listed as Hungary/Austria. Documents conflict on his age that he stepped on US soil. Whatever and whoever was in his past vanished once he came here with him refusing to talk about it. So I have no family back from him. I do know he was extremely proud of all his sons who joined one branch or other of the service. He even changed his name. My dad was about 10 when he saw a word board in the shed with a faded word on it. When he asked his mother, she said it was his dad's name once, but never to ask him about it. So I could see how a great mystery could be wrapped around the one I've had my whole life.

Thank you so very much for the chance to win a copy of OUT OF TIME. This book is already on my TBR list and I would love the opportunity to read and review it.

  25. I can't think of a perfect setting for my life, since I have moved 30+ times, and lived in 11 different states (several of them twice!) Maybe I would be in Witness Protection or something!😉

I absolutely LOVE Lisa's books; she is one of my FAVORITE authors! Last year, I binge-read all of her series in chronological order... and even started the Brand of Justice series even though it wasn't finished. I RARELY do that! I haven't read Out of Time yet, though! I would love to win it!
