INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR PATRICIA BRADLEY

USA Today Best-Selling author Patricia Bradley is the author of fifteen Inspirational Romantic Suspense books and two sweet romances set in the South. She is a Romantic Suspense Selah and Reader’s Choice Award winner, and a finalist in the Carol Award and the Daphne du Maurier Award.

Patricia and her two rescue kitties call Corinth, Mississippi home, and when she's not writing, she likes to throw mud on a wheel to see what comes out.

I'm so excited to talk to Patricia Bradley today about her upcoming release. I'll also ask her about her writing process.

INTERVIEW WITH PATRICIA BRADLEY

What is the title of your latest release? And tell us a little about it.

DEADLY REVENGE releases November 5. It’s the third book in the Pearl River Series. (Working title was Deadly Vengeance, and I’m having a hard time making the switch. I don’t how many podcasts I’ve done and called it by the working title.) Here’s the back cover copy:

Twenty years ago in Pearl Springs, a dam was constructed that caused many people to lose their homes as they were claimed by eminent domain. Though most people have moved on, clearly there is someone out there holding a grudge, and now he’s exacting his revenge.

Not long after Deputy Jenna Hart came home to Pearl Springs, she is called in to provide protection for Pearl Spring’s former mayor, who now has his sights set on a national office in the US Senate. Lots of very public events are on the calendar, and Jenna can’t manage his protection alone.

Enter Agent Maxwell Anderson, Jenna’s former colleague at the Chattanooga Police Department—and a man with whom she shared a smoldering fire of attraction. As they team up to track down a killer bent on revenge, the old sparks reignite while the investigation gets tangled when another suspect comes into play.

Are you traditionally published, indie published or hybrid?

I’m mostly traditionally published although I’ve indie published several novellas that have been in anthologies. I really admire those who indie publish—it’s a lot of hard work!

Do you edit as you draft or wait until you are totally done?

Funny you should ask…I am learning how to dictate my scenes and that means I’m doing a lot of editing as I go. I’ve always edited somewhat as I go, usually laying down the suspense line then doing a second pass and adding more romance. I’ve always said it’s easier to kill ‘em off than to get them together.

Describe your writing space/office!

Wait a minute! Let me get it cleaned up first… I have a desk that raises although I rarely raise it because I don’t create well standing. It’s like I have to either be sitting at the desk or out on my deck (when it’s warm enough) to write. My desk faces windows, and I have a cardinal feeder attached to one of them. On another wall is a map of the current town with the courthouse, jail, offices, a church, etc. laid out. I even have a McDonalds…file cabinets line the other wall/ and a bookcase is on the last wall.

Is there a craft or fictional book that changed your writing life?

A multitude of craft books changed the way I write, but I’ll just mention two: James Scott Bell’s Write Your Book From the Middle and K. M. Weiland’s blog. Both are excellent resources for writers.

What’s your favorite genre to read?

The one I write—romantic suspense. My love of it started years ago with Phyllis Whitney’s Airs Above The Ground.

Are you a plotter, pantser, or somewhere in between?

I guess I’m a pantser, sort of. I plot like driving at night—as far as I can see. Usually about the halfway point I can ‘see’ the rest of the book and it gets easier.

Tell us about your book—what’s the logline or elevator pitch?

Jenna and Maxwell will have to draw on their skills to prevent a wave of disaster poised to hit Pearl Springs. But can either of them fully trust that the other has their back?

How did you decide where to set your book?

I wanted a mountain setting, and I was familiar with the ones around Chattanooga, Tennessee, so I created the fictional town of Pearl Springs. That was the reason for making the map of the town. Fictional because I wanted a place I didn’t have to factcheck where certain buildings or restaurants were.

Do you create your characters first or the plot/crime?

My characters come first. Both Jenna Hart and Max Anderson were in the previous two books in the Pearl River Series. Then I have to find a problem that will throw them together and a conflict that will keep them apart. It’s a lot of fun!

Thank you so much for talking to me, Patricia. I can't wait to read DEADLY REVENGE!
