Water Adventures in Real Life and Fiction

By Kristen Hogrefe Parnell

Summer is right around the corner which means one thing for those of us who live in Florida: water sports. My toddler’s translation: Make anything with water a sport.

The hose spigot was becoming his new favorite way to soak through an outfit, so we found a water table on sale and gave him an early birthday present. He can splash his hands to his heart’s content, and as long as he stops trying to climb into it, I might get away with just having to change his shirt afterward.

I love his enthusiasm about water, though. Both my husband and I enjoy just about any activity on the water: surfing, jet skiing, kayaking, and snorkeling.

My novel Hold Your Breath gives my characters their own share of water adventures. Half of the story takes place in Bimini, Bahamas, but not everything is tranquil in paradise. When travel blogger Jayna Scott discovers a dead body on her fiancé’s yacht, she becomes entangled in his web of secrets and crushed by yet another failed romance. Her only hope to save herself and the people she loves comes in the unlikely form of a ginger-haired private investigator and his seemingly too-good-to-be-true faith in the God who ultimately reaches down to rescue her.

I’d love for you to share in her story—whether you prefer your water adventure reading on a beach blanket next to the surf, in your backyard by the hose spigot (like my toddler), or sipping iced tea by the pool. I’m giving away one Kindle copy of Hold Your Breath. Simply leave a comment sharing your preferred water pastime along with your email address to enter to win.

Happy water adventuring of your choice!

  7. My favorite beach activity is walking on the gulf side in Florida searching for shark teeth. It’s fun to also scoop and sift through the sand and shells looking for them.

  8. I love going to the beach, but we live in the desert, so hanging out at the pool is what happens most. I haven't had the opportunity to do too many water adventures!

When we were growing up all the kids got sent to our grandparents lake house for the summer. There were a lot of us. We spent our days swimming in the lake, playing all kinds of team sports, fishing, skiing and playing in the woods. It was the perfect childhood growing up.
