WHERE DO MY IDEAS COME FROM?

This is a question I’ve been asked a lot. Ideas can come from all kinds of places. Something in the news, a television show that makes you wonder, what if? Even something that happens in your own life can ignite an idea. One great writer suggests going to someplace like Amazon and reading the plots of other books in your genre. This doesn’t mean stealing someone else’s idea. A lot of different concepts can come from a single notion.

In my own life, small seeds have always managed to spark intriguing plots. For example, I got the idea for COLD PURSUIT by reading a Facebook post by a friend who mentioned something called Synthesesia. This condition confuses a person’s senses. For example, a certain word may ignite an odor – or a color. I began to wonder how this would affect someone who is angry at seeing the world in such a confusing way. Could it even drive him to kill when combined with a disease like schizophrenia? That little nugget of an idea created my entire story.

My latest release, COLD THREAT, came from my love of snow. What if a serial killer only killed when it snowed? From that idea came a killer nicknamed, the Snowman.

Here’s a little more about COLD THREAT.

Twenty years ago, several people were murdered in Des Moines, and the only evidence left behind was a snowman ornament hanging ominously on a tree in the victims' front lawns. With a suspect behind bars, the killings have come to an end--or so everyone thought. But now crimes with a similar MO are happening in a small Iowa town, and a local detective believes the killer is back and ready to strike again.

With little time left on the clock before they have another murder on their hands, private investigators River Ryland and Tony St. Clair must work alongside Tony's detective father to find evidence that will uncover an evil that has survived far too long. As the danger mounts and the suspect closes in, it will take all they have to catch a killer--before he catches one of them.

You can buy COLD THREAT here!

Leave a comment. One person will win an ebook copy of either COLD PURSUIT or COLD THREAT. Your choice!

  9. I went down a research rabbit hole the first time I heard of Synthesesia. I didn’t add thinking about adding a disease and killing, which is one of many reasons I’m a reader rather than a writer. Thankful for minds like yours to keep my TBR pile high. Becca12901 at yahoo

  11. Think we all take nuggets of fun or interesting that come up in our life (be it personally, read or just in passing) and tuck them away. I use them and it leads to more research in my hobby of photography.

Love the way you pull them out and use them in developing your most interesting and gotta read books!
