For years after I became a Christian, I thought there was something wrong with me. I went to a church that had frequent revival and prayer meetings. There was always a build up to these special events about how "God was really going to show up" and afterwards people would talk about how they "felt the presence of the Lord." Each time I would be hopeful that I too would feel a shift in my spirit and each time I left the service feeling incredibly blah. Eventually, I stopped going. I couldn't handle the disappointment and feeling like I just wasn't tracking with the rest of the congregation.
Over the years, I have come to realize some things about myself that affect how I connect with God. First, I am not a group person. I'm an introvert. The jobs that I have thrived at like being a writer are jobs where I work with other people (editors and other writers) but largely am by myself. Second, I really have a negative response when people "hard" sell things to me. It makes me not want to do or buy whatever they are trying to promote to me. If a book is on the NY Times bestseller list and everyone is talking about how great it is, it makes me not want to buy it. I'm afraid the build up would just lead to disappointment. Saying that God is "really going to show up" at a church service is what I would call a hard sell. Also, I think it's really manipulative and discounts the nature of God. God shows up when he wants to or needs to, not because we sing really loud and dance around.
I know there are people who have had life changing experiences at these services and I don't want to discount that. All I am saying, is that has never been the case for me. I did figure out how I connect with God in a meaningful way. First of all, being out in nature can leave me awestruck. Watching a gaggle of geese land on a pond is like hearing a worship song. To me, there is nothing that stills my heart more and lets me hear God clearly than to sit by a river. Also, there are times when I am reading a novel and something a character says or the way characters interact will illuminate a spiritual truth for me. Obviously, reading my Bible and singing back verses to God makes me feel close to him. I think that last one might be true for most Christians.
So how do you connect with God? For some people it might be in helping others. It doesn't have to happen in a church service. Or it might be that you have been to a church service that was life altering. I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment and your email and I will choose a winner to receive one of my Love Inspired Suspense books of their choice.

I so agree that God meets each of us in His own way. We haven't had a revival service at our church in I don't know when because our pastor feels a lot of time people make commitments based on emotion.
ReplyDeleteyour pastor is very wise.
DeleteHi, Sharon. Enjoyed reading your comments, and I agree with you on not always being able to "feel" the Lord's presence when we're "told" that we'll feel Him in a certain setting. . . However, I think, (and know), that we will "feel" His presence more as we take time to read His Word (try KJV), especially Psalms, which are like prayers to Him, and interaction between Him and us, individually. That helps me; plus writing poetry, or a song, based on Scripture; and seems to prepare me better, to be a resource, as I have opportunity, to interact with others who need spiritual help and encouragement (as a pastor's wife). I always enjoy your books, and would love to win a print copy. Please remember I do pray for you at times, and hope that the Lord continues to encourage and sustain you. . . If you are interested, I also have a harp CD with all original songs I'm confidant would be a blessing to you :). Appreciate your prayers for us, too, as we continue to minister in "our" town. I connect with God in my home, all alone early in the morning. I can look out the window next to me and see His beautiful creation. I can look at the photos of family that surround me and be thankful for His blessings. I attend church regularly and love to connect with other believers there. But I personally connect with God in my familiar quiet place. watts.vickie@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI connect by listening to faith music. Also, riding with my husband on our motorcycle and reading faith based books.
ReplyDeleteI spend time in Word daily at home. Growing up I spent a lot of time in prayer tower. Prayer is so important to me. I am not. Social person. I'm fine with kids. I taught kids 44 years. Jane Squires
ReplyDeleteI connect more with God when I can sit quietly and look at the sky, no matter the time. Thank you for your insight, lesncyn@att.net
ReplyDeleteI really appreciated your comments as I, too, struggle. I'm not a people person. It's not that I don't like them, but I do like "my space". My husband and I like to picnic by the river or lake in our town or even find one somewhere else. It's always peaceful and I comment on all the different colors that God has made and all the different birds, wildlife He has created. It's so peaceful. I do like out church and new pastor/wife. They are very much people persons and reaching out. I have a hard time talking to people I know and talking to someone in the grocery store (clerk) is a struggle. Then I struggle with myself that I'm not reaching out and sharing the gospel. I do so enjoy the books that share the gospel and have snippets of scripture too. I think, "Oh, I didn't think of that" or "That's new) and makes me think. So, Sharon, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I saw so much of myself in them. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the post helped. thank you for posting.
DeleteI also feel like something is wrong with me because I haven’t connected with God at services or going forward for healing and seeing others being filled and blessed but it escapes me. I connect with God more in my garden or yard.
ReplyDeleteI love your perspective and that the "hard sell" hasn't soured you on Christianity, but you realize where God speaks to you. The awe of Him at the mountains, in the ocean, and nightly sunsets fills my heart too.
ReplyDeleteThe night sky always causes me to catch my breath and wonder at the awesomeness of God.
