ME: What do you do when you’re not writing? Any interesting hobbies?
SS: I have a one-hundred-pound German Shepherd who loves the outdoors and demands lots of long walks, regardless of the weather. I love to read, crochet, and occasionally, I make greeting cards and scrapbook.
ME: What was your favorite book as a teen or child?
SS: I have always been an avid reader and as a kid I loved Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume books.
ME: Tell us three things about yourself that might surprise your readers.
SS: Before I started writing full-time, my career included positions in emergency management, police, fire, hospital, urban search and rescue, and Homeland Security.
ME: What genre did you start out writing? Have you changed course? Why or why not?
SS: Mystery and suspense are my very favorite genres to read, so writing in that genre was a natural progression for me. However, I have tinkered with a timeslip mystery suspense too. It hasn’t seen the light of day, but I have high hopes for it.
ME: What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?
SS: All criticism is tough when it’s done cruelly and not in kindness. However, I try to take something constructive from the words. The best compliment was having readers comment about how much they love my K-9 characters.
ME: Any other genres you’d like to try? If yes, what and why?
SS: Timeslip stories fascinate me, so I’d love to try writing one of those. I enjoy research and it would be fun to put the past with the present weaving it all into a compelling read.
ME: If you could go back in time and do something differently at the start of your career, what would it be?
SS: Oh, there are many things I’d do differently if I got to press that giant redo button. I’d have started writing earlier and not allowed fear to keep me from taking that first step to write a book.
ME: What is the most important piece of advice you’d like to give to unpublished authors?
SS; Write what you want to write. Don’t get caught up in trends or try to make yourself fit into a mold. If God’s placed a book on your heart, trust Him to bring it out through your obedience to Him. Having said that, take the time to learn craft. There are so many opportunities to attend conferences – online and in-person, read craft books, get involved with writing groups. If you feel compelled to break writing rules, first, learn what they are.
Here's a little bit about Framing the Marshall: Proving his innocence may cost him his life…After a brutal attack, US marshal Riker Kastell regains consciousness only to find a murdered gang member in his mudroom. Even worse, Eliana Daines—his ex-sweetheart—has a DNA program that pinpoints him as the murderer. And Eliana’s technology has them both targeted by criminals. Now he and his K-9 must protect Eliana…and find the killer who looks just like Riker before they become the next victims.

Your jobs provided great research for writing romantic suspense! Does your GSD have any specialized training?
ReplyDeleteNo, Niko's best skill is chasing the ball and hoarding it for himself. LOL. He is incredibly sweet and lovable though.
