Yes, the jackets are packed, LOL. I can hardly wait to get up to Lake Superior's North Shore this week!
There's nothing quite like the beautiful hiking trails and glittering 10,000-plus lakes of summer, the outrageously gorgeous colors of autumn, or the pristine silence of the winter cross-country ski trails in northern Minnesota.
But though the flaming reds and awesome oranges of fall have now passed, we still might see some of the shivery yellow leaves of the birches and poplars.
And then there is the lake. Vast, forbidding, and beautiful, with its maximum depth of 1300 feet, it's so cold year-around that it actually doesn't give up its dead from the hundreds of shipwrecks lying at the bottom--which adds a certain level of mystery and spookiness when the winds come up and skies turn dark. Remember Gordon Lightfoot's song, The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald?
Going this time of year means we'll be hoping for high waves crashing on the rocks outside our cabin windows--or maybe even a good ole N' Easter. It's a cozy place to curl up by a fireplace with a good book, with the fireplace crackling.
Though in this case, I'll be huddled over my laptop and hoping to finish my current manuscript on time!
Perhaps this is one of my favorite places on earth because it's in my DNA--evidenced by 23andMe and Ancestry results. All (100%) of my biological relatives came from up there, and before that, straight from Finland, Sweden and Norway. So I guess that'd why it has always felt just like home.
What is your favorite place to go for a nice get-away? And have you ever looked back into your family tree?
Leave a comment, and you'll be entered in a drawing for a free e-copy of my new special collection--Coupled by Christmas!
On another note, I have a new book out--Wolf Creek Danger, the second book in my Wyoming Danger series. Here is a quick description below,
and HERE IS THE LINK so you can find it on Amazon. It's free on Kindle Unlimited, or for just $3.99.
Leigh McAllister has come home to the Rockies to set up her new veterinary practice, but now someone from her past is threatening her and that danger is growing. Will returning be the worst--and most final--decision of her life?
Wishing you all my best!

Roxanne, I've been to Northern Minnesota, to the very place you're talking about! It was May and there was ice on the trees. ;-) But it is so pretty. We went on up to Canada just so I could say I'd been to Canada.
ReplyDeleteI love Lake Superior but actually prefer Lake of the Woods. I live in International Falls MN
