INTERVIEW WITH DARLENE L. TURNER

Darlene L. Turner is an award-winning and best-selling author and lives with her husband, Jeff in Ontario, Canada. Her love of suspense began when she read her first Nancy Drew book. She’s turned that passion into her writing and believes readers will be captured by her plots, inspired by her strong characters, and moved by her inspirational message. You can connect with Darlene at darlenelturner.com where there’s suspense beyond borders.

Interview

If you had to describe yourself in one sentence, what would you say?

A Jesus-loving, flavored coffee drinker who loves writing suspense and everything plaid.

What do you do when you’re not writing? Any interesting hobbies?

I love tole painting. This is painting scenes on wood like snowmen, gingerbread men, etc. It’s such fun and relaxes me. I have also recently discovered that I love building Lego! I’ve made the typewriter and the red truck. Next up for me is the orchid!

Tell us three things about yourself that might surprise your readers.

Oh dear. That’s a good question. I love camping. I always wanted to be a police officer or an actress. I never really liked Seinfeld.

What genre did you start out writing? Have you changed course? Is there another genre you’d like to try someday? What is it?

Interestingly, the very first book I wrote I discovered was more gothic than romantic suspense. At that time, that genre wasn’t that popular, so I changed to romantic suspense. I would love to go back and re-write that gothic story and turn it into a series.

If you could go back in time and do something differently at the start of your career, what would it be?

Read more in both fiction and writing craft books. Oh…and not compare my writing journey with others because we’re all different.

Do you have any writing goals you haven’t met yet? What are they?

I would like to write a novella and maybe try a romance (not sure I can do that without throwing in a body! Haha).

What are you working on now?

Book #9 for Love Inspired Suspense. Feeling very blessed! I’m also working on a trade novel to pitch to publishers.

What is the most important thing you’d like readers to take away from your books?

That God is always there—even when we don’t feel His presence.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I’m so blessed by all the support and encouragement my readers have given me. Thank you!

  9. Always like your interviews as I learn something new each time. This one is particularly good. By gothic do you mean in the vein of Victoria Holt and Phylis Whitney? And does “trade” novel mean a full length book? Don’t include me in drawing as I won a copy recently. Good luck to the others.

    1. Hi Toni! Yes, like Phyllis Whitney or if you've read any of Jaime Jo Wright's books....like that (Jaime is amazing!). Yes, trade means full length - 70-90K words. Thanks for stopping by, Toni!
