OKLAHOMA MIGHT BE COOLER THAN I THOUGHT

One thing I love about writing is that it gives me the ability to learn new things. When I moved to Oklahoma last year, I had figured it was flat and hot with a fair amount of red dirt. Now that I'm researching for the book I'm currently writing, I've learned something unique about the town of Hugo in Southeastern Oklahoma that makes for an interesting story setting.

Did you know that the circus winters in Hugo, Oklahoma? I didn't until this time last year. But two circuses have spent the off-season in Hugo for fifty-two years. Not only is it called Circus Town USA, but the circus culture brings a couple of nifty additions that most cities can't claim.

First, it is the home of the Endangered Ark Foundation, an elephant preserve that offers a home to retired circus elephant. I've wanted to take a day trip down to Hugo and visit the elephants, but they're closed on Saturdays, so I've had to satisfy myself with pictures for now.

Secondly, and maybe I'm the only one who will find this interesting, but they've included a section of the local cemetery for circus performers and circus animals. The Showman's Rest features tombstones that you won't find anywhere else.
I plan to have my story finished by the end of June, and I can honestly say that the research on this book has been half the fun.

  2. Our town was home to many Native Americans back in the 1600’s and 1700’s. Like Tecumseh, Blue Jacket and many others. We have a log cabin that belonged to people by the name Galloway. These Native Americans were visitors to this family. Men like Daniel Boone and others were also in this area. It’s got a real rich history.

  3. Smuckers was founded in our area (not quite my exact town). Also Goodyear is nearby and we can still see the Goodyear blimp flying around sometimes.

  7. I've been to the cemetery in Hugo and found it very interesting. Hubby and I were clowns so maybe that's why it was of special interest to us. A few years back, I posted daily a different tombstone with doing some research on each performer. We ended up hearing from several of the performers relatives. Lots of folks in our clown circles loved the little daily articles I posted and hated to see them end. There are some pretty amazing stories behind those tombstones!

  8. The area where I live was home to several Native American nations prior to Anglo settlement, including the Tonkawa and Lipan Apache Nations, with the Comanche Nation moving into the area later. The region next fell under the jurisdiction of the Spanish and then Mexico, though Native Americans were still in control. Several settler families arrived throughout the 1840s and Tumlinson Fort was constructed for their protection at the site where my neighborhood was built.

  11. I currently live in NC. Their copy of the Bill of Rights was stolen and returned by the FBI a few years ago, but their copy of Mary Katherine Goddard's Declaration has been missing for 80 years.

I'm from PA. The Logan Guards, a militia group formed in 1858 in my hometown, was one of the first to respond to Lincoln's request for troops in the Civil War. He greeted them all personally when they arrived in Washington.
