My Favorite Part About Writing

When I decided to write on this topic, I had a very different idea of where this post would go. I’d planned to write something fluffy about how much I love researching new places. How even though I haven’t had the opportunity to travel much, I feel like I’ve seen many amazing locations through the lens of writing. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that my favorite part of writing goes deeper than that. For me, writing has been a blessing on a spiritual level for two reasons.

1.) During the planning phase of writing I’ve researched some  atrocities. It’s comfortable to believe that the men and women who committed them were so hopelessly broken they were nothing but monsters to begin with. The truth is, they’re people—image bearers of God—just like you and me. Knowing that without God’s grace, I could do things I cringe to put on paper is difficult to reconcile in my brain, but it’s true. While I’m writing, the process often gets dark and heavy. Sometimes I step away and watch otter videos or something equally adorable to lessen the gloomBut when I reach the spot toward the end of a story and finally type the triumph of good over evil, it's a personal reminder that the trials here on earth are fleeting. In the end, God—Who is good—wins.

2.) As my characters face difficult, even hopeless situations, I have the responsibility of processing their emotions, thoughts, reactions, and choices for them. I’ve often found that the internal struggles I’ve written into my characters mirror struggles I later faced—almost as if God in His sovereignty and kindness prepared me for things I couldn’t have anticipated. It’s weird and wonderful looking back and seeing how the spiritual questions my characters found the answers to are tied so tightly within my own story.

There are so many reasons I love writing that I could bore you to tears with the list, but I’m most excited about the way God has used it to show me truths about Who He is.

  5. Love it! It's so neat to see how God uses fiction to speak truth about our non-fictional lives.

  8. I love teaching. As a teacher-turned-homeschooling mom, right now that means leading a history club and two book clubs for my kids, plus helping them find the things that they are individually passionate about and where their dreams lie. I love doing that.
