Be Careful What You Wish For

Sorry I'm late on the post, but it's a hazard of writing! How so? you ask.

Well, before I was contracted, I had all sorts of time. Time to blog, time to write, time to clean...you get the idea. Writing was sort of a hobby, one that I loved. Not that I don't still love writing, but it certainly isn't a hobby any longer.

No, once you become contracted, writing becomes a job. Most of the time when readers think of authors, the picture below is what comes to mind.

Signing books, speaking at different functions, teaching classes on writing, and I've certainly done all of those things.

But most of my time is spent behind my computer. Six, eight, maybe ten hours a day. Mostly eight, though.

Since 2013, I've written twelve books and three novellas, plus a ton of blog posts. Those twelve books represent over a million words. Can you believe that writing is all I've done since 2013?

Not that I'm complaining, mind you, but I don't think many writers who yearned to be published realize how much work goes into this writing gig.

Or how little respect others have for your time. Since I work from home, it's automatically assumed I can drop my writing and do whatever: go out to lunch, attend a meeting in the middle of the day, entertain drop-in company, answer the phone--no one understands when I turn my phone off, but it takes at least thirty minutes to get back into a story when I'm interrupted.

I do hope you don't think I'm whining, because I'm not, just stating facts as any writer will tell you. I would be writing even if my publisher didn't pay me. Let me rephrase that. I love writing even when the words are like pulling up dandelions. (ever tried that--those suckers don't let go of the ground). I have friends who question my sanity. They can't understand why I would sit for eight hours every day when I don't have to.

They don't understand that I DO have to. Writing is in my blood, and I'd rather be writing than doing anything else, even lazing on a beach in Hawaii.

So, just in case you're one of those people who yearn to write and get published, go for it! But count the cost. There's always a cost to doing what you love.

Comments? What do you want to do more than anything in the world? Leave a comment and I'll enter you in a drawing for a copy of one of my books--your choice.

  7. What I want to do the most and my goal is to travel - to see all that this great nation has to offer in the way of landscapes, critters and the odd and unusual sights. However, it seems when we wish or set a goal it's like the dangled carrot it seems. We wanted a motorcycle and to go riding. Accomplished that but after a short while my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer and our riding came to a halt - no regrets. After hubby's retirement and Mom's passing, we wanted to travel again, but this time in the comfort of a car due to age and agility. We had three wonderful trips, then Covid-19 hit and all this years plans had to be cancelled. I have medical issues that eventually will curtail these big trips. My biggest desire is not only for a cure or vaccine found for this horrible virus, but that I am also given the opportunity to explore more of our countries beauty, to record it in photographs and enjoy the freedom to travel with hubby some more before health dictates what, when and where I go. Then I will be happy to sit at home in our dream house we built 3 years ago enjoying the beauty of the Ozarks and blessed to have hubby as always by my side.

  9. That's a hard question! My first thought was to own a shop that sells books, quilts and coffee with a resident lap cat or two. I seriously think working for yourself is a hard job! Thanks for the chance to win a book!

  18. Spending more time with friends and family, traveling, going to the movies. Actually, the movie theaters finally opened up again this month where I am if they don't close up again. This summer we were supposed to go to Spain to visit my brother and his family who live there and see my niece and nephew. We even already had the airplane tickets since last December and finally canceled the tickets in April. Hopefully, we can go next year.

    1. Suzan, at one time I wanted to start a pottery business, making wheel-thrown pots and plates, etc, but alas it wasn't to be...so I plan to put that in a book one day. :-)

  20. After knowing you personally so many years, I just want to comment that ANYTHING you put your mind to do, you do it full steam ahead. You forgot to mention you do pottery, crocheting, sewing, and a host of other things. I am so proud of you and had it not been for you we would not have a non profit corporation touching many lives today. I can not narrow down my "dream" but if I had one, YOU would try to help me accomplish that dream. You do that for others without even realizing it; that's what makes you such a special person. God has blessed you with so much and you acknowledge Him with all of it. That's why you are such a successful writer, potter, seamstress, cook, and friend!

  21. Thanks for sharing more insight into the life of a writer. I agree Passion is in the blood so to speak. My passion is Biblical counseling and mentoring with women. If I could I would have a retreat center and be able to do more intensive work with women.
