Thank you for joining me at Suspense Sisters today!
I’m so excited to share with you that this is RELEASE WEEK for ALWAYS LOOK TWICE, Book 1 in my Uncommon Justice series.
I’m giving away a copy of ALWAYS LOOK TWICE to one winner (U.S. Only) so comment if you want to be entered in the drawing, and please leave your contact information or another winner will be chosen.
I always enjoy the month when a book releases because lots of articles and interviews and feature stories pop up around social media. I hope you’ll take time to read a few of those. If you follow me on my Facebook author page (http://facebook.com/elizabethgoddardauthor) you’ll be able to easily see those articles as I share. You can also catch any book deals and giveaways as well as learn about updates.
One of my favorite questions that I’ve answered so far about ALWAYS LOOK TWICE is simply, “Where did you come up with the idea for your story?” This is a fun question to answer because with each story that answer is a bit different. When I first decided to pursue writing for publication, I asked other writers I met at a conference how they came up with their ideas. I’m sure you’ve heard this—They started asking ‘what if?’ Certainly many stories are written that way. I find it fascinating to learn how other writers create their novels.
In the early years, I wrote for Heartsong Presents which required a chapter synosis—basically a synopsis that informed what would happen in each chapter. As the writing years progressed and I’m now writing for Love Inspired Suspense, my editor also requires a synopsis. So I’ve learned to lean heavily on that roadmap.
However, with my longer novels with Revell I’m allowed to create the story without providing a detailed synopsis. Sometimes that has meant that I start with a loose idea of the story and then allow it to grow organically from that basic one paragraph blurb.
For ALWAYS LOOK TWICE, I couldn’t wait to dive into Heath McKade’s story. I’d met him in NEVER LET GO when I gave him his own point-of-view, and I was eager to get to know him better. I knew that I wanted his romantic interest to be a crime scene photographer who could no longer take pictures of crime. You know---all that blood and death. Makes for great conflict, I think.
So I had the characters, but I did not have the actual suspense storyline. I couldn’t seem to write a synopsis. But I had a scene in my head---a man in hunting gear peering through his rifle with a high-powered scope, hunting in the Wyoming wilderness—only we learn that instead of hunting wildlife, he’s hunting a woman.
I developed the entire story from that one scene and just allowed the ideas to flow as I wrote. I can’t say this experienced was the easiest way to write because I’ve never been a “pantser,” but at the same time, surprises and twists arose that I hadn't expected.

Here’s the blurb:
At the advice of her therapist, homicide survivor Harper Reynolds has traded her job as a crime scene photographer for a more peaceful life taking photographs of the natural world. But her hopes for a life surrounded by the serenity of the outdoors are dashed when she inadvertently captures a murder being committed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She flees the scene in fear--and loses the camera.
Former Green Beret Heath McKade is a reserve deputy in an understaffed county who has been called in to protect Harper, a childhood friend he is surprised to see back in the area. When Harper learns that the sheriff's department can't find any evidence of the murder she witnessed, she is determined to do what she can to see that justice is done. What neither Harper nor Heath could know is how many explosive secrets from the past will be exposed--or how deeply they will fall for each other.
In this suspenseful page-turner, bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard keeps you on the edge of your seat as you discover that uncommon justice lies just on the other side of fear.

Enjoyed getting to know more about Elizabeth Goddard's writing style/method. It has always amazed me that an author can take one idea or mind picture and create a wonderful piece of literature out of it. I think that's part of the joy of reading is to see how the characters develop whether it's likable or one of great angst.
ReplyDeleteLove the trailer! Since hubby and I both love photography, I feel I already have a connection to Harper Reynolds. Can't wait to see the connection between Heath and Harper by having the chance to read this amazing sounding book.

ReplyDeleteI always love a full length Elizabeth Goddard book and I’d love to read Heath and Harper’s story. It sounds like it promises to be a “can’t put it down” kind of suspense. I enjoyed the interview and was intrigued that the whole story evolved from the one scene. A photographer would be the last person I would expect to be “the hunted.”
