WORTH WATCHING...

Sharon Dunn writes both humorous mysteries and romantic suspense. Her book Night Prey (Love Inspired Suspense) won a Carol award for 2011. Her first book Romance Rustlers and Thunderbird Thieves was a Romantic Times top pick and finalist in the inspirational Novel of the Year. Sassy Cinderella and the Valiant Vigilante, the second book in that same series (The Ruby Taylor mysteries) was voted book of the year by ACFW. Zero Visibility is her fifth Love Inspired Suspense with another one scheduled for release in March 2013 titled Guard Duty. When she is not writing, Sharon spends time with her husband, three children, two cats and a nervous little border collie named Bart. Worth watching...

Somewhere between reading Nancy Drew in the fifth grade and my first Agatha Christie in college, I knew that mystery was the genre that I connected with the most. The first Christie I read was A Caribbean Mystery with Miss Marple. Loved the perceptive older sleuth. Although I read the Christie’s mysteries that featured Hercule Poirot, I didn’t connect with that character as strongly…

Until…I watched the televised adaption of Christie’s Poirot mysteries starring David Suchet. Watching the Poirot episodes is one of the few times I can honestly say that the movie (in this case the television series) is better than the book. Suchet brings nuances and humor to the character that I just didn’t pick up on in the books. The relationship that Poirot has with his assistant Captain Hastings and his secretary Ms. Lemon is enhanced and expanded on from the books. The 1930s sets and costumes are wonderful. There is also throughout the series some subtle Christian themes. Poirot is presented as a practicing Roman Catholic. Themes that to the best of my memory were not present or were very understated in the books. David Suchet is a Christian who provided voice of Aslan for Focus on the Family’s Chronicles of Narnia radio shows. I don’t know if he had anything to do with bringing the Christian themes more to the forefront in the series or not.

The episodes (some 65 in all) are an hour long with a few longer movie length ones thrown in. I still have to watch the final episode Curtain. If I had to choose a favorite I would say Murder on the Orient Express. Even though I knew how it was going to end it was well done. You can find many of the episodes on Netflix streaming and PBS airs them from time to time or you can rent them. Well worth watching.

Sharon is giving away copies of her books:

Romance Rustlers and Thunderbird Thieves - A Ruby Taylor Mystery (Award winning, humorous mystery)

  1. Hi Sharon! Loved your post. :) For me, my love with suspense and mystery began with The Boxcar Children, then Nancy Drew, then Dee Henderson. :) It's grown from there. I'd love to add you to that list.

  2. I have all the The Ruby Taylor mysteries. My two daughters have also read them. So fun, laugh out loud funny and great stories.
I started reading mystery books as a child. The only author I knew back then was Enid Blyton (I grew up in England. I don't know if anyone outside of the UK have heard of her.) She got me hooked on mystery and suspense and I have been reading ever since.

  10. Poirot! Our library gave away about 30 VHS of that series. We watched several of them before we had to take a break. They were pretty funny. I love suspense and am always looking for a good book to read.
