Friendships are so important to our lives, aren’t they?
Friends, enrich our lives. They’re there for us in all the special moments that
come in our lives. They stand beside us and give us strength in bad times, hard
times, and the times that feel impossible to survive.
Some friends come for a season, and some for a lifetime. All
are there to lift us up, give us a good laugh, get in trouble with us, and just
have our backs when we need them to.
I’ve been blessed with some amazing friends who have been
part of my life for years and I can’t imagine being without them.
But I also have another set of friends that I can’t sit
across the table from and enjoy a meal with, or share a cup of coffee with, but
they’ve been an important part of my life just the same.
I’m talking about the friends we all make through the pages
of the books we fall in love with.
Like other friends, some of my book friends have been there
with me since I was a child. While others came along at different stages of my
life.
One of my favorite book friends from childhood is Laura
Ingalls Wilder from the Little House series. Laura and Mary’s adventures
brought me so much fun as a child. I felt like I was right there with them
through each adventure. There was also Heidi, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn
from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Charlotte and Wilbur from Charlotte’s
Web—that book made me cry so much!
As a teen, my book friends became the heroines from the
pages of the romantic suspense books I had devoured. Those are still some of my
best book friends even today.
Later, when I started writing, my book friends truly became
special to me because they were part of me. Saying goodbye to Sidney Morgan
from my Courage Under Fire series was hard. And I’ve become good friends with
each new hero and heroine in the Hope Island Securities series.
Though different from regular friendships, book friends can
help define certain moments in our lives from those childhood adventures to a
first broken heart, or even a life-changing event.
For a chance to win a $10.00 Amazon gift card as well as an
ebook copy of one of my Hope Island Securities books, tell me about your favorite
book friend. Be sure to include your email and I’ll announce the winner when
next we meet.
Until then, many blessings.
Mary Alford
I read and reread The Chronicles of Narnia and cried buckets over Reepicheep. I loved that brave little mouse. I’d also ask for “munchings and crunchings” like Gurgie in Chronicles of Prydain. Thanks for the smiles, Mary. I’ll be reminiscing about literary friends all day. Becca12901 at yahoo

DeleteWell, I had a friend for 41+ years! Things have happened that have been very hurting so I guess we aren’t friends any more. And, yes I did try to talk to her on and off for a couple years but she just excuses. So…. We do need friends but I now have none!
ReplyDeleteAw...Beverly, I'm so sorry. It's sad when those people close to us hurt us. I hate that you've had to go through this.
DeleteI always liked Pip from Great Expectations. deborahdumm@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. I loved Pip.
DeleteI probably sound like a broken record to some, but Atticus Finch and Scout are my book friends. I loved that Atticus was a fighter for justice in an intelligent, soft-spoken kind of way. And you saw everything through Scout's eyes as an innocent child. lesncyn@att.net
ReplyDeleteNot at all. I loved Atticus Finch and Scout. Such a good book.
DeleteSo many I have made through the years. Some notable ones would be Anne Shirley, Nancy Drew, Elizabeth Bennett, Hannah Swensen, etc. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book when I was in middle school was of course, Are You There God? Its Me Margaret! I think we all read it and loved it back then. I was so excited to give it to my granddaughter last year and watch fall in love with it too. It just made my heart feel so good.

ReplyDeleteIt is hard to pick one friend I Love them all Thank you ! Sarahbaby601973(at)gmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThat is a really hard question to answer as they are all good.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was younger, I like the Christopher Cool Teen Agent books. I wanted to serve my country like him.
ReplyDeleteI started reading Elswyth Thane's Williamsburg series when I was a teenager and have read them many times since! It still remain the series that impacted me the most. I feel like I know Tibby and Julian from Dawn's Early Light and would recognize them if I saw the on the street! In fact, when my sister and I went to Williamsburg, we visited all the places from their lives that we could and felt like we were strolling down the streets with them.
ReplyDeleteCathy
