I'd be lying if I tried acting cool about Steven James' latest book, Broker of Lies, hitting the shelves of the bookstore across the street from the office where I work. If you can picture a turkey buzzard circling above a not quite deceased animal, that might give you a pretty good idea of how excited I was to get my hands on it. Since a friend of mine recommended Steven James as an author to me five years ago, he's been a solid favorite, so I'm excited to share this review with you all.
As with the author's other books, Broker of Lies was deep with layers and suspense. I particularly enjoyed how the main character, Travis Brock, wasn't trained to be a hero. He has no law enforcement background. What he does have is an eidetic memory and the courage to step in when the need arises. In my opinion, the characters Steven James creates are so multi-dimensional and consistent with the people we meet in everyday life that they leap of the page, and the characters in Broker of Lies were no exception.
One thing I will mention is that the author must have done a significant amount of research, and there was a good deal of technical language, especially at the beginning of the book that slowed my reading for the first couple of chapters. Either it lessened, or I became accustomed to it, because I didn't notice it so much after chapter three.
The plot was great and not a simple one to figure out, which I always appreciate. So far, this was my favorite book of 2023. It left me with a serious craving for a bottle of Dr, Enuf and a little jealousy for people with eidetic memories. I'm once again circling the books store like a bird of prey waiting for the second installment in the series.
