When I first started reading Dark Intercept, I didn’t quite know what to expect. I’d heard about the spiritual warfare elements, which I knew I would enjoy. Also, the book was a Christy finalist and a Carol winner in 2022. Such prestigious recognition and a theme I occasionally visit excited me for the content between the covers.
The story centers around a former Navy SEAL who is recruited to find his ex-best friend’s missing daughter. Somewhere in the middle of the story, his mission morphs into something bigger and more intense than Jed wants to believe. I enjoyed Jed's struggle with faith and the growth that he experiences. Just as many people today fail to see that the battles we fight on earth may be more than meets the eye, he attempts to explain away the things he encounters from a flesh and blood standpoint. In the end, he has to admit that there is a battle going on that we can’t fathom—the war between good and evil.
I’d be remiss if I didn’t issue some warnings with this review. Two issues I had with the story may make some readers reluctant to give it a try. 1.) Even though the book was published by Tyndale, the language wasn’t always appropriate. Both the good and bad guys used crass words, and I was a little put off by it. 2.) A few of the characters have a special gift that is said to be from God. They are able to communicate telepathically, which felt a little new-agey to me. Also, I don’t know of anywhere in the Bible where one of the gifts of the Spirit is the ability to talk to each other via thought.
The ending was very well written with a twist in the epilogue I never saw coming.
I had planned on giving away and ebook copy of Dark Intercept, but due to some of the content, I’m opting to give a $10 Amazon gift card instead. Comment below for a chance to win!

I’ve heard this was really good but I am surprised by those two elements. I like this theme but I’m not interested in the telepathy element. Thank you for your review.

The book sounds good, and while I don't like crass words, that wouldn't be a deal breaker, but the telepathy element would be. Thanks for an honest review!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your honest review! Outstanding job of giving accolades where they are due, but also urging caution with some of the elements!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the honest review you did of this book! I agree the two things you point out would make it a “no read” for me. Like the story idea though! joanienov@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! The telepathy would not bother me since I do enjoy sci-fi but the profanity would. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review. Knowing going in helps set (reset) expectations. Like Cherie, I would probably mentally frame it as sci fi but telepathy as a gift from God is unexpected in a book marketed as straight Christian fiction. Becca12901(at)yahoo
ReplyDeleteThis is the type of review I enjoy. Honest & straightforward, telling the positives & negatives of a book so the reader can make the decision to read it before he/she invests the time & money. I will turn a movie off if it has profanity so this book (as interesting as it sounds) would be a no go for me.
