Springing into a new season...with a crazy spring contest!
Spring has sprung around here. What's that mean? My flowers are sproinging to life, deadlines are looming, and my teaching job kicks into high gear with standardized testing. Busy, busy, busy as the bees on my lavender plants! I thought I'd provide some fascinating facts that you might not know about the zingy, springy month of April.
- Of the eight US presidents who died in office, three died in April.
-April is the first month of the year with exactly 30 days and the only month with an “i” in its name.
-“April” is an anagram of “pilar” which means “hairy”.
-April begins on the same day of the week as July every single year.
April also means it's time to spruce up my newsletter subscriber list, so I'm doing an extra fun contest. The details are in my YouTube video so click the link and check it out if you'd like to participate. https://youtu.be/j0ac0Xp0560
Finally, tell me what you love about spring!

An Interview with author Tracee Lydia Garner....and a book give-away!
1. Please tell us about your path to becoming an author. What were some of the bigger challenges when you started writing?
At the age of 23, I was failing college and I prayed to God for a "fallback plan". I told God this college stuff ain't working too good, can You help me? LOL He delivered and I entered my story into a contest I (He) found online and I won FIRST PLACE, GRAND PRIZE. It was an awesome time. I even stayed the course in college while going through the process of being published and it just lifted all my "boats" they say. I think the validation and encouragement helped bleed into other areas of my life. Some of the bigger challenges for me were simply consistency and staying focused. I wished that I'd written faster and had more coming out, I would have two more full lengths novels after the contest that got contracted. I don't write full time, I have a job outside the home in social work and while I'd love to write full there are a lot of factors involved with making that leap. I personally am still not ready to do that, both financially and just really with my own level of discipline and as such, I can really get bogged down in all the desires and frustration over not doing the writing I could be doing if I could just quit the day job. Sadly, there are no guarantees even if I do quit. Quitting is not an option at this time, so I try to focus on the writing I am able to do and simply ask God to help me keep at it.
2. How many books have you written? What publisher(s) do you write for?
I have three traditionally published books and four Indie published books. I used to write for BET Arabesque and then I branched out and wanted to see what indie publishing was all about. The first indie book came out in 2007 before Indie publishing was all the rage and that title completely bombed. Since then I've learned a lot about the process but also had tons of fun along the way.
3. What is your writing process? Do you plan everything ahead of time?
I have plotted one book and that was not successful. It remains incomplete Just two years ago, I did a version of plotting for me, which was to write 1 - 35 in a word doc or on a sheet of paper and then I wrote just 1-3 sentences to sum up each chapter. I realize that's more synopsis I know and while it was fun, it did help me write about 250 actual pages and you would think that's great, you're almost done; but somewhere along the way I fizzled out. I wanted to try it just to see and confirm that one thing was true: that I'm a Certified Pantser. I always feel like the time I spend plotting is time I could just write it. I do a bit of plotting after the fact but that's just to see if my timeline is correct, to map out names and places and ages and locations but they are just quick notes and fact checking, not real plotting information.
4. What are your greatest joys in your writing career?
The greatest joy besides readers that tell me about something I wrote, is just the initial/infant ideas that come and how I feel God speaking to me. I'll be writing something and I hear "put that right there" I do it but I'm like why is that? And later in the story it's revealed and I'll be like "Oh, wow. Thanks God".
5. Do you have some writing goals that you hope to achieve in the future?
Some writing goals include release two books this year which I've never done and then release three books next year. I'm writing a little faster, something I've been praying for and other goals for writing obviously to reach at least one best-seller list in my lifetime, have the opportunity to have contracted work again even though yes, self-publishing is awesome, a traditional contract was just as awesome to me way back when. Long term, I'd just like to continue to write (to publish) / teach / speak full time. All of these three things I do more on the side at present. I've spoken at the federal government level and I teach an 8-week Novel Writing class a couple of times a year, at the local junior college. I see my writing and publishing as a platform for doing all of that.
7. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I'm a Virginia native (living just 45 minutes from our National Capital) that loves to read and write romantic suspense. I use a wheelchair as I have a degenerative muscle disease called Muscular Dystrophy. Currently, I'm secretary for the Virginia Chapter of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW-Virginia) and I'm a co-host with author Mary Manners for the Faith, Hope and Love Chapter of RWA monthly Facebook Parties -this year being my first. I enjoy the theater and always go to several plays a year even day trips up to NYC to catch something on or off Broadway and when I'm not working full-time in human service, I'm reading, trying to up my marketing game and trying to stop shopping (as a recovering shopaholic).
From those who leave a comment, I will give a paperback copy of my new release, Deadly Affections. He knows her from a shared history and painful past. The question is, can he trust her?

QUESTIONS
A while back I
answered several questions from readers. Today I’m going to tackle a couple
more of them.
Melissa Dripps
Lemaire, Lela White, and Beverly Duell-Moore asked how I got started. Lela also
asked how many years I’ve been writing.
I
started writing when I was very young. I wrote my first poem when I was six or
seven, but no one would believe I wrote it. This happened to me again when I was
in high school. We had an assignment to write three poems. Our teacher read all
of them to the class, not telling anyone who the poems belonged to. After
reading mine, the teacher announced that she was certain she’d read them
before. Yep, she accused me of plagiarism! I should have done something, but I
didn’t. How wonderful it would have been if she’d encouraged me to write – told
me I had talent. Maybe I would have started writing much sooner. And before
you ask… Yes, I’ve wanted to contact her now that I’m a published author and
let her know about it. But I haven’t been able to find her. LOL!
When
I was forty-five I was working at a bank and was just learning about the
computer. (No, I won’t tell you how many years ago that was!) I’d been watching
Murder, She Wrote, and for the first time started wondering what it would be
like to write mystery novels. I remembered what had happened when I was younger
and finally realized that maybe people were accusing me of plagiarism because I
had some talent. So I sat in front of my computer at lunch one day and started
writing. By the third page I was convinced I was not called to be a writer! It was really hard! However, I decided
to give it one more try. I started to type again and all of the sudden
something happened. My fingers started flying across the keyboard, ideas began
to bubble up…and that was it. Since that day, I’ve never wanted to stop writing
– nor have I ever had writer’s block. Of course I’ve had to work at coming up
with ideas from time to time, but it doesn’t take me that long.
After
writing my first story (it wasn’t good!) I realized that writing a book was
more than just tossing words on a page. It took training, just like everything
else. I spent a lot of time learning the craft of writing. After a while, I
sold my first book to a small publisher.
Mary Gessner - I
know a little about when you started writing, but I'd like to know more about
why. How did you know the Lord called you to write?
Mary,
you’ve probably asked me one of the most interesting questions you could about
my writing journey. I’d been writing for a while, small publishers, etc. One
day the reality of what it would take to spend the rest of my life as an author
hit me. And it frightened me. The time, the dedication, the training… Ask any
author about the time we have to spend away from our family and friends, the
things we have to give up for deadlines, etc. It’s not easy. So, I went to God
about it. To this day, I can’t explain why I did things this way, but here’s
what happened. I laid out a “fleece.” Something I’d never done before. You
probably know the story from the Bible – how Gideon wanted confirmation that
God was with the Israelites. He told God he’d lay a fleece out on the ground.
If the fleece was wet and the ground was dry the next morning, it would be a
sign that God was indeed with them. He even reversed that, asking that the
following morning the fleece remain dry and the ground wet. God answered both
requests. This is how Gideon knew God would give them victory.
God
and I have this thing about snow. Not
time to go into it here, but suffice it to say that when I was young, He used
snow to let me know He loved me and that I wasn't alone. He's done the same kind of thing several times. So…I laid out my
fleece. And I was serious. I fully intended to walk away from writing if He didn't respond. I had no desire to throw away years of my life on
something I wasn’t called to do. My fleece was this: If I was supposed to write,
it would snow during a certain week.
In
April.
Yeah.
I didn’t find out until later that it hadn’t snowed in April, in Wichita,
Kansas, where we lived, for forty years. Later, when I stumbled across this
information, I almost fainted!
The
week started out. No snow. No snow predicted.
And
then Friday came.
Nine
inches of snow.
I’ve
been writing ever since, and I’ve never questioned my calling. God
has confirmed more than once that I’m doing what I’m called to do. That doesn’t
mean things won’t change – that He won’t adjust the direction of my journey –
but for now I know I’m walking out His will. Something, in my opinion, you
really need if you decide to spend a significant amount of your life writing.

Hot New Inspy Suspense!
A pacemaker should have saved oil and gas magnate Nathan Moore’s life. Instead, it provided his killer with a seemingly perfect means of execution.
