BOOK REVIEW: DANGEROUS PAST by Suspense Sister Roxanne Rustand

Marji Laine here.

Last week, our Suspense Sister, Roxanne Rustand, released book nine of her Northern Pines Suspense Series. I realized that I’ve never gotten to read one of her books, so I quickly rectified that situation. I didn’t want to start at book nine, so I picked up book one. I’m so glad I did.

Roxanne reminds me of one of my all-time favorite authors, Phyllis A. Whitney. Whitney had a habit of setting a heroine in the midst of unknown hostility where unexplained events covered intentional attacks. Her writing, if memory serves, was either from an omniscient (narrator-type) viewpoint or only from a single point of view, bu
t as the stories progressed, attacks grew more pronounced and more dangerous.

Roxanne, thankfully, uses a dual point of view between the hero and the heroine and even throws in a few other characters from time to time to give a more colorful background. But in the same way as Whitney's heroines, Lauren, faces seemingly inescapable problems.

This is an emotionally-charged story with a good amount of tension and rich characters. It adds multi-layered characters, Lauren and Michael, with strong back-stories, reasonable reactions, and even defining quirks. Amidst past problems and their current hopes and goals, both Michael and Lauren find joy, laughter, and make embarrassing and even heart-breaking mistakes.

A troubled young daughter and an entourage of various pets add to this heart-warming story. Even the goat has a personality!

Dangerous Past has a mild level of suspense, particularly at the beginning as the backdrop of the story is laid with the initial interactions of the characters. Michael and Lauren, though, with their various secrets, hidden needs, and quiet desperation, intrigued me. The story itself amped up its flavor of suspense throughout, and the final scenes satisfied completely, leaving me eager to read more of this series.

Here’s a little more about this story.

She needs to hide from her past. He only wants to be left alone. What could possibly go wrong?

A DISILLUSIONED ATTORNEY
Michael is searching for a quiet life in a small town. Alone. When his elderly, vagabond Aunt Bertie announces her plans for yet another summer in Europe, he agrees to stay at her home on the shore of Briar Lake. It’s perfect timing, while he hunts for a house to buy and a location for his law practice.

Perfect---until he meets a flamboyant stranger at Bertie’s front door, who refuses to let him inside. A very nervous one, at that.

A WOMAN WITH A TROUBLED PAST
A housemate? No way. Bertie’s menagerie is of epic proportions—thanks to the homeless animals she constantly adopts. Lauren promised to move in and care for them this summer. It’s a promise she cannot break to the woman she has loved as an "extra grandmother" since childhood—even if she fears this forced proximity to a man who could uncover her darkest secrets.

But there’s another problem… one that could end her life.

Roxanne Rustand is the USA Today Bestselling author of forty romance and romantic suspense novels—in both Clean & Wholesome and Christian genres. Her books have sold over 2.9 million copies.

  1. The latest sounds great as always. When I wasn’t out plowing and shoveling, I was on the couch with a dog as a foot warmer, reading and knitting. Becca12901 at yahoo

  2. Sounds like a great story. I live in NW Florida so no snow. However, it has been cold here so I have been relaxing whenever I can with a warm blanket in my recliner and a book. cherierj(at)yahoo(dot)com

  8. I'm in love with this cover! We didn't really have frigid days in California but during foggy days all I want is my fireplace burning, warm blanket, and a hot drink!

  9. Thanks for sharing your review. It hasn't been too frigidly cold where I live, only in the mornings so far. Just bundling up and burning candles when I'm home!

  10. I live in Florida so no snow yet. We have had a bit of cold this year.
You can still take a brisk walk in the morning. jenningsask@verizon.net

  11. Here we are 9 days into it and still home bound. While they finally got the road in front of our property cleared (events of living in a small community in the Ozark Mountains where all roads are 2 lane), we still can't get down out long and sloping driveway. Thankfully we have a whole house generator (which we haven't had to use yet), a well-stocked pantry, and a stack of books to read. It helps that we are retired too with no place we have to get to. With frigid temperatures until mid-week, we might get out by next weekend. My favorite reading spot has been in front of the fireplace, in my multiple adjustable electric recliner with nice blanket.
Can't wait for the opportunity to read Bertie and Michael's story. Sounds like an amazing read! Love that there are lots of critters in the story too. Do so enjoy reading suspense stories. On my TBR list and can't wait to read and review it.

  12. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! This sounds like a great book! To answer your question, hubby and I didn't do much during the snow/ice. He dug out one of our cars and shoveled our and our disabled neighbor's sidewalks. Other than that, we just chilled and tried to stay warm. It's still very cold where we live but I'm hoping it'll warm up into the mid 30's by the coming week.

  13. I am such a fan of Marji Laine. Her book series "Grime Fighters" is one of my favorite series. I'm in South Carolina and we are not equipped for this snow. Everyone bought supplies and we are all hunkered down in our homes. I have all the feral cats on my patio and front porch with dozens of cubbies and heat pads inside them. They both have a roof, so I have tarped all around. They all look cuddled in the cubbies, warm and dry. Warm cat food for dinner.

  15. I huddled in the kitchen with a blanket and sometimes two coats. When I could not take it anymore, my husband brought in an electic heater. I spent time reading. God bless you. dpruss@prodigy.net

  16. I went about my business because other than a couple of days below 10 degrees, the storm skipped us here in the foothills of the Rockies.
