Bucket List Travel

by Sharon Dunn

So I have started planning for retirement even though it is probably seven to nine years away. My financial advisor asked me if I wanted travel to be part of the picture. Of course it was. I got to thinking about exactly where I would want to go. For one, I would like to attend at least one big writers' conference per year and then take one big fun trip per year.

Several places are at the top of my list. Ireland and Scotland for sure. But also I would like to see the fall leaves in New England in particular I would like to go to Maine.

While going to Ireland and Scotland is appealing. I think that I would only go if I could stay there for awhile. Two weeks would only be time enough to recover from jet lag before it was time to get back on a plane.

That is why I would keep much of my travel in North America. The Caribbean sounds nice but I think I could find a tropical paradise in Costa Rica as well which would be an easier flight I think. And Belize has always appealed to me because they speak English there.

I have never liked vacations that involved non stop running around from one tourist spot to another. To me, that sounds more like work. I prefer to plant myself in on place, relax and maybe do a little sight seeing. It is for that reason that one of the places on my bucket list is a beach somewhere. A place where I could walk and listen to the waves and then read a journal for most of the day.

Any place close to water is appealing to me even though I am not big on swimming or boating. Something about oceans, rivers and lakes is relaxing no matter what.

Finally, I would like to take an Alaskan cruise. I wasn't big on cruises until I did research for my book Undercover Mission which takes place on a cruise boat traveling around Alaska. Some Alaskan cruises are set up so you are never out in the deep ocean for days and days. Instead, you are in port almost every single day.

How about you? What destinations are on your bucket list? Leave a comment with you email address and I will pick two people to win a copy of my book Undercover Mission

  3. My bucket list consists of visiting all 50 states. I'm hoping next year, that we can travel the New England states for 3-4 weeks, or at least part of them. lesncyn@att.net

  4. My bucket list travel place would be Armenia! The country of my grandfather. You see, we lost track of the family almost 100 years ago. About six years ago my (There’s a story to this!) brother found our lost cousins! I want to meet them in person and not just on Skype and Face Time.

  5. My bucket list includes a train trip across the US. My husband and I had planned to go out west via rail for our 50th anniversary in April, but I was having multiple medical tests. So our trip is delayed until next spring. watts.vickie@gmail.com

  6. Lots of great ideas here! I'm with you--I plan to do a lot of traveling when I retire. Or when my husband does, anyway. I'll probably keep writing. 😉

  8. Since I don't plan to retire, I'll have to travel in-between deadlines. :-) And that travel will definitely include an Alaskan cruise!

  15. I'm very much a homebody, but there are a few places I'd like to see. Top on my list are both Scotland and Ireland. My grandmother's family was from Scotland, so I'd really like to see where they were from. Like you, I'd like to stay for a couple of weeks and not be dashing all over everywhere, but be able to sit and absorb the beauty around me.
