I've never read anything by Susan Sleeman before. What was I thinking??
TOUGH AS STEELE was recommended to me by Amazon, and it caught my eye because the Steele name is part of my ancestry. And to be honest, I was looking for a new series to enjoy, so it seemed a perfect fit.
Susan Sleeman did not disappoint! I absolutely love the vibe that I get off the Steele family from the older generation all the way to the youngest sister and cousin.
I also enjoyed the vibe from the main characters. Londyn and Nate have their share of awkward situations, but the chemistry between them leaps from the page. (Or in my case, from the audio narrator.) Both are more than a little controlling, but when push comes to shove (and they were definitely shoved into a tight place) they were able to peal away some of the twists of this story.
Londyn Steele is a big-city detective who has unexpectedly become the head of her family's securityservice. Assigned to guard a wealthy octogenarian, she finds she must pool all of her resources to save her family's reputation when the woman winds up missing. Her job is made even harder when County Detective Nate Ryder declares jurisdiction over the scene.
Nate has his own reasons for insisting on control of the investigation. The missing woman has become a surrogate grandmother to Nate. As a former Navy SEAL, he not only has the skill to find her, he has the drive and determination to do so . . . alone.
Until his lieutenant agrees with Londyn's lieutenant that they should work together to find the missing woman. More than tempers flare throughout their time together. That's for sure!
The suspense carries this book. In fact, I decided to use the recording to motivate myself to walk more. And it worked for a few days. Until I got about half-way through the story. At that point, the tension was such that I couldn't make myself stop listening even after I'd flung myself into my recliner.
So good!
I've already started book 2! I'm so glad I took a chance on a new-to-me author.
When was the last time you read something from an author you'd never read before. Did you like it? If you did, share the author's name or the book in the comments. You might even win a copy of one of my books!
last week; was okay

ReplyDeleteI just ordered Her Darkest Secret by Jessica Patch, who is a "new to me" author.
I met Jessica several years ago when she was just starting out. She's a stitch. I have to read her latest!
