INTERVIEW WITH JANICE CANTORE

A former Long Beach, California, police officer of twenty-two years, Janice Cantore worked a variety of assignments, including patrol, administration, juvenile investigations, and training. She's always enjoyed writing and published two short articles on faith at work for Cop and Christ and Today's Christian Woman before tackling novels. She now lives in a small town in southern Oregon, where she enjoys exploring the forests, rivers, and lakes with her Labrador retrievers, Abbie and Tilly.

Janice writes suspense novels designed to keep readers engrossed and leave them inspired. Crisis Shot is the first title in her latest series. Janice also authored the Cold Case Justice series—Drawing Fire, Burning Proof, and Catching Heat—the Pacific Coast Justice series—Accused, Abducted, and Avenged—and the Brinna Caruso novels, Critical Pursuit and Visible Threat.

INTERVIEW

If you had to describe yourself in one sentence, what would you say?

Dedicated.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

I love the outdoors, so anything outside, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, walking the dogs, stuff like that.

Any interesting hobbies?

Kayaking and snowshoeing

What was your favorite book as a teen or child?

Black Beauty. Really just about any horse book

What genre did you start out writing?

Suspense.

Have you changed course?

Not really, except maybe it’s become more romantic suspense.

What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

Was told my writing was ‘clunky’. It was hard because I really didn’t know how to change. Now, my editor, Erin Smith, helps me cut the ‘clunkiness’.

What has been the best compliment?

That one of my books inspired someone to enter law enforcement. And, one mother of a police officer emailed me to say thank you for writing about law enforcement in a positive way, explaining in the process how hard the job is.

Any other genres you’d like to try?

Actually, I’m happy writing what I’m writing.

If you could go back in time and do something differently at the start of your career, what would
it be?

I would have kept a journal of my law enforcement career. So much stuff I’ve forgotten.

What is the most important thing you’d like readers to take away from your books?

I hope they like the story, and I hope that they are inspired and uplifted by the underlying message.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’d like to give to unpublished authors?

Keep writing, even when rejections pile up. Don’t fall in love with one book or story, keep writing and improving your skills.

CRISIS SHOT

Tess O’Rourke dreams of becoming the first female chief of police in Long Beach, California. As commander of the East Division, she
is well on her way . . . until the night she responds to an officer-needs-assistance call and fatally shoots an unarmed teenager. Despite being cleared of wrongdoing by a grand jury, Tess is so hounded by the public that she takes a job in Oregon to escape the bad press.

Winning over the residents of Rogue’s Hollow might be more difficult than adjusting to her new role as police chief in the small, backwater town. Especially when her closest friend, the pastor’s wife, goes missing and the woman’s cousin is found shot. Tess finds an ally in sheriff’s deputy Steve Logan, but as they track down Rogue’s Hollow’s first murderer, she worries that she’s breaking one of her rules and getting too close to him.

  20. Janice, I have a copy of Crisis Shot but haven't able to get to it yet. Romantic suspense is one of my favorite genres and I have many authors I love who write them!

I find it interesting that you write books in your chosen career as a police officer (retired even); those kind of books are always so much more authentic! Love learning that you love in Oregon because I love on the North coast :-) I think Oregon/Washington is the most beautiful area in the world, there's so much of God's beauty here! 😊

Thank you for a fun interview and giveaway chance! An Amazon card would go a long way for a new book or two, lol!
