Bonding over books.... and a free give-away

How different our lives can end up, due to chance encounters, casual introductions, or a decision to do something on a whim.

When you look back on your life, do you see moments after which everything changed? Where--perhaps with some divine nudging--you looked at a fork in the road and your decision made a big difference in your career, your friendships, finding your spouse, or determining what you wanted to accomplish?  A simple decision can reverberate throughout your life in a multitude of ways.

Looking back to college, meeting my future husband was a chance encounter.  With different majors and without any mutual friends, a random moment at a party--one I only attended at the last moment--led to forty-one years (and counting!) of marriage.  Because of that marriage, I ended up living in a rural area in the Midwest...where I met my dear friend Judy, who enjoyed writing and introduced me to the possibility that I might enjoy it, too.  Which led to meeting all sorts of wonderful people who write,  and who have become treasured friends.

Meeting those lovely people, and the chance to come along with me to writers' conferences, probably influenced our daughter to pursue her own dreams.  She is talented and can write circles around me any day of the week,  and wants to become a writer, too.

In looking back, life seems to be a lot like the plotting of a novel, one situation building upon another, with unexpected meetings, challenges and conflicts along the way.

I would love to hear from you!  Did you ever experience unexpected "forks in the road" that made a big difference in your own life?

A free e-copy of Summer at Briar lake will be sent to one of the people who leave a comment!

  2. I loved your story of how you met your husband. I met mine in college. He had a date with my best friend and tried to get me to go with them. Later she set us up on a date & the rest is history. We will celebrate our 51st anniversary in July. We dated almost 2 yrs. before we married. God has been so good to us. The doctors said that he would never see our sons graduate high school. We are expecting our first great granddaughter, a grandson is graduating next month from the U of Ala. and the youngest grandson will be starting high school in the fall. That diagnosis was 35 yrs ago. God still answers prayers.

  4. Random choices, chance encounters, odd coincidences do seem to direct our footsteps on the path of life...for good, and not so good sometimes. My husband and I call them "GOD-incidences. Wonderful post. Thank you. :)

  5. One big thing for me was in high school. The guys had to take a test for the military. Girls could take it if they wanted to. I wasn't prepared for a history test so I took the one that wouldn't count against my grades. After getting a letter from the Army I decided to enlist. I am a follower. fishingjanATaolDOTcom

    1. Thank you! My most recent books aren't romantic suspense, but all of my earlier ones were. I'm glad you enjoy Nancy Mehl because I think she's a wonderful author! Best wishes in the drawing!

  7. I guess our fork in the road was moving to St. Louis for hubby to go to grad school. It was supposed to be five years to get two degrees. 20 years later, we retired and moved downstate. An earlier one was staying on Guam as missionaries for a year after hubby was discharged from the Navy. Then they shipped us home to the states. You could deferr and you still got everything shipped for free.

  8. I definitely believe that, as my whole life has been a series of them. My whole career path stemmed from such a decision, as did my marriage (also working on 41 years)! I met my husband when I was dropping off my daughter at my aunt's house for her to watch while the other side of my family all went out to dinner. My husband was next door chatting with the neighbors and my uncle and asked him who that beautiful girl was going in his house. When I returned from the family dinner out to pick up my daughter, he was still waiting there to be introduced and playing with my daughter. A year and a half later, we were married and he legally adopted my daughter as his own. 41 years later we have 3 children and 6 grandchildren, and it has been a whirlwind of many twists and turns!

  9. I was born & raised in Minnesota (love the 4 seasons there!) then met & married a man from OH, who was a wanderer & never happy where we lived (MN, OH, CO, MN, & back to OH) After he left me & 4 children, I considered moving back to MN, but after considering all the variables, decided to stay in OH--where I met my best girlfriend, and a host of other very nice, supportive people!
