A good deal vs. trusting God to provide

I was raised by a very frugal mother. I used to say she could stretch a dime until it squealed. Most of her penny pinching was for practical reasons. She was a stay at home mom with six children to take care of. My father's drinking consumed much of his paycheck.

From my mom, I learned to coupon clip and seek out bargains. I have found that even when I have the money to spend, it is way more fun to go on a hunt and destroy mission searching the clearance racks and the bargain bins. There is something triumphant in being able to tell the story of how I pieced together and outfit that would have cost $200 full price for $20.

While I belief that we are called to not be indulgent and careless with what God provides, I also belief there is a down side to being frugal. I have to guard against going totally the other way and live a life where I am depriving myself when God had provided a way for me to celebrate abundance.

When my mother died, she owned two pairs of pants and three shirts. All of which were threadbare. Something about that made me really sad. Her kids were mostly grown and she could have treated herself to a new outfit. My mother lived in such a place of fear about money, that she could not trust that God would provide in the future and that spending money to meet needs and even celebrate the joy of how good it feels to twirl around in a pretty shirt and pair of slacks would have been okay.

I can't change the way my mother lived. I can only move forward and always be aware of when my tightfistedness is not about being smart with money but rather simply not trusting God to provide. God has a pretty good track record with me in terms of financial provision. There is something truly wonderful about going out to dinner with a friend and leaving a big tip for the waitress. That having been said I still can't bring myself to pay full price for clothes and furniture. I always wait for the mark down and the sale.

How about you? Do you love to bargain hunt? When do you think that spending is a way of celebrating God's provision? What life lessons did you learn from your parents about money, good or bad?

Leave a comment with your email address. To celebrate getting a good deal, I will be giving away copies of my 2 for 1 bargain books for Love Inspired Suspense. This Mountain series features one of my full length books along with another author's full length book. Such a deal.

INTERVIEW WITH C.C. WARRENS

Happy Friday, friends!

It's A.D. Lawrence. I’m so excited to introduce you to one of my favorite suspense authors! Read to the end for ways to connect with C.C. Warrens and learn how to win a Kindle copy of her Holly Trilogy. I’ll share her bio then we’ll dive into the interview.

Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope. If she's not writing, she's attempting to bake something--however catastrophic that might be--or she's enjoying the beauty of the outdoors with her husband. One of the many things she's learned since she started this journey is that the best way to write a book is to go on a long stroll with her husband. That is when the characters--from their backgrounds to the moments that make them laugh or bubble over with anger--come to life.

INTERVIEW

What unfinished writing projects do you have gathering dust in a drawer? Do you think you’ll ever try to publish them, or were they just part of the learning process?

My first novel, the one I worked on piece by piece over a period of about five years, is “Darkness Within.” It’s more of a Christian fantasy book than Christian suspense, my current genre. I haven’t finished it, but at some point I hope to go back and overhaul it so I can share it with the world. It would take a LOT of overhauling, but that actually sounds kind of fun.

We all have projects that are a real bear! Which book of yours was the toughest to write? Why?

I think all my writing projects go a little bear at some point. Some just go full-on grizzly, and I’m rubbing my hands together and wondering, “should I run away from this before it emotionally chews me up and spits me out?” My last grizzly was “Imperfect Justice.” Pulling together the events of five previous books into that one to create a courtroom trial was . . . a bit hair-pulling. I was terrified it would fall apart or be so boring people would read it because they needed something to help them fall asleep. The biggest challenge is that I never planned for there to be a trial when I wrote the previous books, so I had nothing planned for the defense. I had to build the case for the prosecution and then see where I could poke holes in it and twist the perception of facts. Phew! Reading courtroom transcripts came in handy.

Where did you grow up, and do you use this setting in your novels?

I grew up in a little country village in Ohio. Lots of cows, horses, and goats around. In fact, we had all three at one point. While I’m renaming the village, it is the basis for the town in my current work in progress. Right down to the Developmental Center that was shut down, leaving a spooky old building that some out-of-towners sneak into because they’re looking for ghosts.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever had happen to you as a writer?

Funny . . . oh boy.

There was the time we went to visit New York City, where my novels are set, and my husband almost got us arrested. Richard Marx, the detective in the novels, is from the 25th precinct. We decided to visit that precinct, but apart from a small lobby up some steps, we couldn’t see anything. My husband, who is in a wheelchair, spotted a wheelchair ramp and decided to go right up. I asked if he was sure we were supposed to go up there, but he assured me it was the wheelchair entrance to the building, so we were fine. Two people, who turned out to be officers in plain clothes, even held the door for us.

This was the jail cell area, and there were a lot of uniformed officers hanging around. One of those large officers looked right at us and demanded, “What are you doing in here?”

I had never been in a police department before, so I was a little intimidated to begin with. Of course, now all the cops are looking at us, and the big officer was mean mugging us for waltzing right through the door… that his officers held open.

My husband explained that I’m an author, and we were hoping to take a look around. Oh, that went over well.

The big officer said, “There are only two ways you come in here. Either you’re a cop, or you’re wearing these,” and held up handcuffs. That was it. I was ready to go. My husband tried to discreetly take video of the layout as we left.

Which character in your books is most like you?

I think Holly is most like me. Physically, we couldn’t be more different, but she inherited many of my quirks and perspectives, especially burning things in the kitchen and fumbling her way through social interactions. We also both really hate the colors yellow and brown.

Here’s a bit of information about C.C. Warrens’ most recent book, Imperfect Justice:

Ten months ago, he nearly killed her.

By the grace of God, she survived.

But the fight to regain her life is just beginning.

Holly Cross is counting down the hours to the moment her foster brother’s trial begins. Collin has haunted her footsteps—and her dreams—for fifteen years, and she wants nothing more than to put that pain and fear behind her and build a new life. But before that can happen, she has to confront the man who tried to destroy her.

Can she find the courage to face her monster in court, or will she trust the survival instincts that are screaming for her to run while there’s still time?

DA Shannon Marx is known for her skill and force of personality in a courtroom, and she's determined to put Collin Wells where he belongs: behind bars and away from everyone she loves. But Collin Wells is unlike any defendant she's ever come up against in court. He's intelligent, charming, and completely devoid of conscience.

Will the jury be able to see the monster beneath the civilized veneer?

Collin Wells is a man accustomed to getting what he wants, and he has every intention of walking out of that courtroom a free man. He will fight with everything he has, and if Shannon and her loved ones can be certain of anything, it's that Collin Wells never fights fair.

What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Win a free copy of One for the Road on CDs

Happy Spring, Readers! Mary Ellis here. Ever wonder what could go wrong while researching/writing a book? Covid, that's what!

Readers familiar with my writing know I do a lot of research before, during and after the book is finished. My first visit to an area is to envision the basic storyline and flesh out the characters. I accomplish this by asking questions of everyone I meet connected to a certain vocation, B&B or sect of people. My second and third visits are during the writing to pull together subplots or flesh out secondary characters. My final visit is to answer the multitude of questions that come up during the writing. For One for the Road, book one of the Bourbon Tour Mysteries, I chose Kentucky, the bluegrass state, for my setting. Although I'm not a bourbon drinker, I heard from several friends that bourbon tours have grown very popular. Hordes of tourists arrive weekly to tour the distilleries. Some tours offer overnight stays with paring dinners. There’s even a train you can take with bourbon tasting along the way. Sounded like a fun getaway weekend with friends. And a distillery sounds like a great place for murder…speaking as a mystery writer, of course.

I planned two trips to Kentucky to research the small (craft) distilleries and interview the master distillers. Then I made plans for an extended visit to the Louisville area to tour eight major production plants. My friends and I planned to take tours, ride the train, go to paring dinners and of course, at least taste the bourbon. Reservations had been made and tickets purchased, then the Covid pandemic hit and everything was cancelled. No more tours. Luckily, most of my book, One for the Road, takes place in a small craft distillery and I had finished that research and was thus able to write the story. But things better open back up before I put the finishing touches on One Hundred Proof Murder, book two of the series, or this writer will be creating a lot more fiction than usual.

Please leave me comment about how the pandemic changed your life for a chance to One for the Road on audio (CD's) Winner drawn in one week. You must leave your email address. Sorry, US readers only.

 By Patricia Bradley

Wondering what's new in inspirational suspense and mystery?

This week we're featuring our own Mary Alford's Firestorm which releases today, March 23! This is Book 8 of 8 in the Courage Under Fire series.

Her brother told her if she ever needed help—no matter how serious it might be—she should find James Cooper. Well, Sarah Hancock certainly is in need now, after Blake is arrested for treason and taken away in the middle of the night. Somehow, Daniel Pamphili’s men have connected Blake to the former commander of his SEAL unit. Blake’s life is in real jeopardy.

Desperate to save her brother, Sarah drives straight through from Colorado to Idaho where Blake told her James and members of Strike Force were in hiding. Sarah arrives in time to see the team’s compound go up in flames. An attempt meant to wipe Strike Force off the face of the earth.

Has she hung all her hopes on this trip only to arrive too late to save Blake?

When James Cooper receives an unidentified call from a female claiming to be Blake Hancock’s sister, he is filled with doubts. Is this another attempt to ferret the team out lead by Daniel Pamphili, the real power behind the One World drive that James and the rest of Strike Force believe is taking the world toward a future Armageddon?

Yet, from the minute he sees her, James is confident that not only is this Blake’s sister, but Sarah would not be here if Blake were not in danger.

The story she tells about her brother’s imprisonment is frightening. No matter what, James will move heaven and hell to save his brother in arms from death, but will he and Sarah, along with the rest of Strike Force, be walking straight into another carefully designed trap that might result in all their deaths?

A New Release And A Giveaway!

Next Tuesday, March 23rd, the eighth book in the Courage Under Fire series release.

Each book in the series has taken me on a journey that I never expected to go, and I’m looking forward to what comes next in the future with new characters and interesting new directions.

Here’s an excerpt from the beginning of Firestorm. . .

Sarah Hancock slammed the brake pedal of her pickup truck with both feet. The vehicle skidded sideways on the icy road before coming to a shuddering stop.

The impact of the sudden action threw Sarah forward. The seatbelt caught hard knocking the breath from her but stopping her momentum seconds before she slammed into the steering wheel.

Her eyes had to be deceiving her. Daylight had broken about an hour earlier. She’d driven straight through the night to reach Idaho. Darkness had hidden the massive cloud in front. Until now.

Not real. Just your imagination. She’d been living off of little sleep and way too much coffee.

And yet. . .

The mushroom cloud was living proof that something terrible had happened.

Sarah knew very little about nuclear weapons except what she’d learned in school. If she could trust her eyes and that was nuclear fallout, then she needed to put as much distance between it and herself, and she needed to do it quickly.

She realized she still had both feet on the brake pedal, her legs locked in place. Sarah slowly lifted her feet and jerked the steering wheel hard to the left. The tires slipped on the road but finally caught, and she maneuvered the truck around to the way she’d come. Once the vehicle was straight, she floored it and flew down the road as fast as the conditions would allow.

Glancing in the rearview mirror, Sarah prayed she could outrun the fallout. Her mind churned out all sorts of lethal scenarios. Someone had nuked the hideout of the people she’d come to for help to save her brother.

Firestorm comes out in both e-book and print on March 23rd. You can preorder the e-book now on Amazon.

In the book, Sarah is a former schoolteacher that is thrown into an impossible situation where she must fight incredible odds to save her brother.

For a chance to win an e-book copy of Firestorm, have you ever faced something that felt impossible at the time. If so, how did you get through it? Don't forget to leave your email address in your comment for a chance to win.

I’ll announce the winner next Tuesday, March 23rd!

Blessings always,

ONE MORE DANCE, a new release, and a drawing for a free book! Roxanne Rustand

This year I'm working on my new Northern Pines series of romantic suspense novels.  The first will be out on March 19th and is titled ONE MORE DANCE.

Here's an introduction...

How badly can a relationship be broken before there's just no chance to save it?

When veterinarian Kate Mathers drives past the scene of a terrible accident and sees two ambulances leave, she whispers a prayer for those involved, not realizing that it's her husband's car in flames down in the ditch, and that a young woman was in the car with him. A woman who has died. Who was she?

Now Jared is in the ICU on the verge of death, and only prayers for a miracle might save him.  Kate is at his bedside, trying to face his precarious situation and also deal with the fact that someone is still targeting both her husband and her veterinary practice. She's also wondering how their almost perfect marriage could have gone so wrong.  Or did it?

If only they can have one more chance to talk and to forgive, and one more dance in each other's arms…

This full-length e-book is currently on sale for just $.99 at all major e-book retailers!  CLICK HERE for more information (or to buy) while it's still at a bargain price.

I saw a quote by Simon Wood on Facebook recently. He said, "In a nutshell, suspense creates drama before the crisis event, while mystery starts its thrill ride after the crisis event."  Which type do you prefer, mystery or suspense?

The quote made me start thinking about the wide range of suspense and mystery novels, too.  From violent physical action to a more psychological drama; from very graphic to edge-of-your-seat drama without being gritty. Which level of intensity do you prefer, as a reader?

Leave a comment and win a free e-copy of another one of my romantic suspense novels,  Comeback Cowboy!

Blessings to you all,
Roxanne Rustand

What Does Retirement Mean to You?

 by Patricia Bradley

Retirement. It's a ten-letter word that means different things to different people. To me, it meant I had more time to write. Since 2013, I've written more than a million words.

I’ve had more friends than I can count on one hand ask me when I was going to slow down and enjoy my retirement. After all, who wants to spend their golden years sitting at a computer, pounding out stories?

Me! Waving my hand like a kid wanting the teacher to call on her. I try to explain that I’m living my dream and why would I give that up? I mean, writing stories is something I can do as long as the stories keep coming.

Another thing I like to do is teach classes on writing. Just this month I’ll be teaching a four-hour class at the virtual MidSouth Christian Writers Conference on brainstorming your character’s journey.

And this is where I need your help. I want to create a character journey for a hero and a heroine for romantic suspense, and then I thought I'd do a hero and a villain.

What I need is a hero and heroine that almost everyone will recognize. I want the attendee to be able to 'see' the character and how lies they believe affect them. I want to look at what's wounded them in life and caused their flaws...what lies they believe about themselves, what they fear the most. Same thing for the hero and villain.

If you'll suggest characters that will fit the criteria, I'll enter you in a drawing for a $10 gift card. And if you'd rather, tell me when you plan to retire or if you already are? And when you do retire, what will you do? Or if retired, what are you doing? (But I'd really rather know the characters you would suggest.) lol

I'm so excited to announce the release of NIGHT FALL on March 30th!

In NIGHT FALL I'll introduce you to Supervisory Special Agent Alex Donovan:

Now that Alexandra "Alex" Donovan is finally free of her troubled upbringing, she's able to live out her childhood dream of working for the FBI. But soon after she becomes a member of the FBI's elite Behavioral Analysis Unit, authorities in Kansas and Missouri contact them about bodies found on freight trains traveling across the country--all killed in the same way.

Alex never expected to be forced to confront her past in this new job, but she immediately recognizes the graffiti messages the killer is leaving on the train cars. When the BAU sends her to gather information about the messages from her aunt in Wichita, Kansas, Alex is haunted by the struggles she thought she'd left behind forever.

In a race against time to solve the case while battling her own weaknesses, Alex must face how far she'll go--and what she's willing to risk--to put a stop to the notorious and dangerous Train Man.

Change is in the Air

You wouldn't know it from looking at the view out my back door. Snow is still on the ground and there is a chill in the air. But spring is on the way. The sun is shining, the temperatures are rising and slowly the snow is melting.

The change of seasons always makes me feel renewed and hopeful even more so with the kind of year we have had because of covid and all the national turmoil.

Here in Montana, it always feels like the seasons are wrestling with each other when the transition happens. So we will have days that make me think winter will last forever and then day that tell me spring is on the way. We may even have one or two more snowstorms before this is over.

I am looking forward to sunshine, warmth and being able to walk the trails and sit in the park by the pond without being bundled up or worrying about slipping on the ice. I am looking forward to being able to travel again. The change in seasons reminds me that nothing last forever, except for God and his promises. BTW the sculpture in the photo was made by my late husband. I think it is fitting to have a flower in the picture since I am talking about springs, even if it is made of metal.

I do not have a favorite season. All of them have something good to celebrate. Even winter means staying inside where it is cozy and warm, maybe reading a book. Summer means getting out, being with people more and maybe even a BBQ or two. How about you, do you have a favorite season? What do you love about it? What are you looking forward to in the coming months? Leave a comment with your email address and I will send two readers a copy of my book Fatal Vendetta. In addition to the suspense and romance plot of of two reporters chasing after the same story. There is the story of the heroine finding healing for a secret in her past.
